R51 General Discussion / trigger stop screw
January 14, 2018, 01:23:26 PM
I was having trouble pinching my finger because of over-travel of the trigger on the R51.  So today I drilled and tapped the trigger guard to accept a 6-40 Allen head set screw.

Works just fine with no more pinched finger.  Also it just might help in the accuracy dept.  Can't wait till spring to find out.  Too cold to shoot around here right now.

R51 General Discussion / Re: problems with r-51
December 25, 2017, 03:14:17 PM
I have had good results with mine.  After putting about 300 rounds through it, I have had just a couple of problems.

#1 is that is I shoot Tulammo in it, the bullets tumble, going through the target sideways.

#2 is that it will not reliably extract WW white box ammo, leaving the empty case still chambered.

I cannot see what is the problem in either issue.  The groove diameter checks out at .355" on the nose.  And I can find no dimensional difference in the extraction groove on the WW brass.  The solution is simple; no tulammo or WW white box ammo will be used in this gun.

BTW, both of these ammo choices function perfectly in my other 2 9MM semi auto guns. >:(

On mine the number is 0025086R51 and the frame is stamped Charlotte NC.

Oh, I didn't know it was that much trouble.  I will probably just leave it alone then. 8)

I was toying with removing the trigger and when I got the slide off, I noticed a small spring that was wrapped around the pin that holds the trigger in place.

The spring does not appear to do anything at all.  It is not tensioned at all and can be rotated around the trigger pin with a small punch.  What it is supposed to do, I don't know, the trigger is returned to the reset position by another spring in the rear of the pistol.

Also, I had to call Remington to get a firing pin retainer pin because I lost the original after taking it out to clean out the firing pin hole.  The guy couldn't find it on the scematic and I wound up getting a pin that was the hammer strut pin.  Fortunately I was able to find the pin that I had dropped on the floor, so /that was OK.

I am beginning to think that these guns were assembled by people who were not properly trained. ::)

But my biggest complaint with the trigger is that its wobbly.  I don't think it is the plastic flexing, but I could be wrong.

Has anyone been able to figure out the source of the wiggle?

That is my main complaint too.  Too wobbly and too narrow. 8)

R51 General Discussion / R 51 trigger

OK, now that I have put about 300 rounds through the R 51, I am finding it OK for what it was designed for (personal defense).  When shooting at reasonable PD ranges, IE 30 feet or less, it shoots well enough and has handled just about all ammo except 1 (tulammo) with no failures.

My main beef is the trigger, It flexes from side to side and is a little spongy (which I probably wouldn't notice in a gun fight) and worst of all, if I don't position my finger with just the tip of it on the trigger, it pinches it between the trigger and the trigger guard.

There seems to be no after market parts for this gun and probably never will be, but if anyone ever offers a replacement trigger for it, I will be a customer.

After reading this thread, I loaded my 2 mags and I can work the slide with them when they full and inserted.

Must be either magazine specific, or gun specific.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Twist rate

That was me.

I asked because I am seeing some degree of ovality to the holes in the targets that I have been shooting at.

Thanks.

I wondered because I had some ammo [tulammo] that was tumbling at the 25 yd. target.  And I also found some oval holes in the tgt.

I'm thinking that this might be the reason for the sub-par accuracy. 8)

Ok, the moment I have been waiting for for weeks! I was very happy to see when I opened the box that the frame was stamped Huntsville, AL not Charlottesville, NC.

What is the deal with Charlottedville NC frames?

My R51 is stamped as Charlottesville NC and functionally it runs good.  The accuracy is not that good, but good enough for it's intended purpose.

Does anyone here know the twist rate in the R 51 9MM Pistol?

I noticed that about 5 years ago, Remington's reloading products, such as primers and such took a sharp up-turn in price.

I think that made the brand unpopular with handloaders and has contributed to their troubles today,

I have used ARX ammo and given it the milk jug test, where it is much more impressive than standard defense type ammo.

Bear in mind though, that the milk jug test is not all than scientific.....
