R51 General Discussion / Re: !st round chambering

For me shortening the legs on the follower made it much easier to rack the slide with a full magazine. On thing that I did to my six magazines that hasn't been mentioned is to polish the underside of the tab at the front of the magazine.  Using an empty case, 357 mag works great, drag in against the underside of that tab and it will probably scratch the case.  I used a Dremel felt tip and polishing compound until the case would slide against the bottom of the tab like glass.  I did these two things before firing a shot and both of my R51s have been 100% reliable.

The picture at the top of the web page is a Gen I.  Notice the location of the R51; the Gen II has that same R51 on the flat surface directly behind the ejection port.  It is moved up and right as seen in the above picture.

Yes, I punched the new hole above (toward the trigger guard) and slightly toward the opening.  I made sure that the two holes are not joined. One of the legs the nut now goes through the old hole and the washer just covers it.  Molding the leather to the gun is the biggest improvement but moving the screw stabilizes the gun and allows the retention to be adjustable.

I received the DeSantis MiniScabbard for a Ruger LC9 w/Crimson Trace LG412 a few days ago.  The initial fit was OK but it did not fit the features of the R51 so the retention was not what it should be.  I wet it and worked the leather into the features and then dried it overnight above a baseboard heater.  The result was a very nice fit and plenty of retention.  The LC9 is larger than the R51 from the trigger guard to top of slide so I punched a new hole for the tension screw.  This prevented the movement at the mouth of the holster and also provides retention adjustability.   My leather working skills are on the amateur level so it may not have the lines of a custom holster but it works. The photos show the before and after.

Waltsblues: Does the tension screw provide good retention with the Desantis MiniScabbard for a LC9 / R51 combo?  I received a Talon OWB for the R51 w/CT laser today in the mail.  It seems to be too loose; the thumb break is not snug enough to draw it tight around the rear of the slide.  I would have rather had it too tight so that I could fit it like a glove.  The loose thumb break adds significant width to the rear of the slide.  I may go the Desantis route.

Also I keep a small piece of leather handy to push against the feed ramp when compressing the spring. That thing is sharp!

I think the problem you are experiencing is you are lifting the bushing to high into the notch. If the grooves around the end of the barrel seem to catch just lower the bushing slightly.  The same issue pops up when reassembling if the bushing is to high.  I usually don't remove the bushing and spring, unless it is really dirty, so it in the right position for reassembly.

I understand that a Charlotte marked frame doesn't mean that it is Gen 1 because the first Gen 2 guns were assembled with those left over frame in Huntsville.  My question is, "Does the H prefix on on the s/n mean it is a Gen 2 assembled in Huntsville?"

I'm considering one of the above because they are both available for the R51 with the CT LaserGuard.  Any experience with either or both of them.

The Desantis Outback is a no-go for the R51 with LaserGuard.  It won't seat deep enough to provide any retention.  It may work without the laser but I'm not removing it just to find out.  It will work perfectly for an original Model 51.  Now I'm back to the Talon OWB or Crossbreed Snapside; both are available for the laser guns.

I had the same questions but didn't want to spend a lot on a holster until I know the R51 is a gun I will carry.  Talon lists their OWB holster for the R51CT but they don't show the ct option for any of their IWB models.  I did order a Desantis Outback from Amazon for $14 and should have it tomorrow.  I'll post my opinion in a few days.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Magazine follower legs

I removed about 1/16" from the followers everything seems right.  Full magazines insert easily and the slide racks like it should.

R51 General Discussion / Magazine follower legs
December 01, 2018, 06:09:52 PM
When my magazines are loaded with seven rounds there is very little room for the top round to be pushed down when seated with the slide closed.  The slide can't be easily racked and I can't see how cycling would be reliable if loaded 7+1.  I've seen several comments about shortening the follower legs; is this situation the reason for altering the follower?

I think one of the purposes of the tab at the front is to move the rounds back into position when they come to the top.  Recoil from the previous rounds will probably cause the waiting rounds to move forward; the shorter it is the farther it moves.  A burr on the bottom edge will cause them to hang up instead of sliding across the edge and back into position.  Both of my magazines would put a scratch on the bullet until I polished the tab.
