R51 General Discussion / Threaded barrels
November 21, 2020, 10:24:01 AM
Anybody know where I can get one, or have one to sell?

I wanted to pick up a third.  I guess I should do so.  Wish I could still get a threaded barrel.

I'm guessing there was a glut of r51's and r51 accessories lying around earlier this year.  This current environment has probably allowed retailers to finally move these excess guns.  I was hoping there would be a final clearance of r51's at firesale prices, but I'm guessing that isn't going to happen.  They will be able to sell the remaining guns, and the new owners will probably announce it's discontinuation early next year.  I wonder if r51's are currently in production?

Of course other options are lighter, but some people just want an all metal gun.

I don't know if it' s such a good idea.  I used to have a Pontiac Fiero, cool car, it had a plastic body with a tube steel frame like a race car. It was designed for a four or six cylinder engine. Because it was light and strong people would drop a big V-8 in it. That woudl usually ruin the car. The suspension was not designed for that much power, neither was the transmission, you had to gut the car to do it and replace pretty much all the internals.

A v8 in a fiero is a great swap.  Especially if you use the 5l fwd ls4 from the impalas.  The supercharged v6 from the grandprix is good too, and a whole lot easier.  If you go from an iron 6 to an aluminum 8, the weight gain is minimal.

I have 2.  I just put lasers on both.

These give you full sized handgun accuracy in a subcompact sized gun.  Sortof like the various ppk or makarov type guns, except the r51 can take 9mm+p.  A bargain at $200.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Rechamber to 38super or 9x23

One other observation......the r51 has problems feeding.  Could this be because we're basically using a 45acp mag for 9mm?  The rm380 gets a nice spacer in the back of the mag to fit the 380.  Why doesn't the r51 get this?

R51 General Discussion / Rechamber to 38super or 9x23
February 24, 2020, 07:27:46 AM
Has anybody tried rechambering an r51 for 38super or 9x23.  I noticed the mags were long enough to accommodate the longer rounds.  It would only be a matter of reaming the chamber, and bending the top of the mag out.....for 9x23 anyway.  38 super has the wider rim.

The r51 mags also look like they accommodate wider rounds as well.  Long enough for 10mm.  Wide enough for 45acp.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Range Results

I suspect the r51 will take an extremely high round count, probably even with +p ammo.  It might even take +p+ without flinching.

I feel like the performance of this gun's action improves on all the other various actions.

Here's an idea for a youtuber, someone could do a video where increasingly hotter loads were run to see what this action could tolerate.  Test it to failure on a bench.  If it survives well past saami specs, it might serve to recover a bit of confidence in this gun.

The rm380 is already mostly set up to shoot 9mm anyway.  It could  easily replace the r51.  Wouldn't even need a different mag.  Just a different barrel and spring.

What is the best email?

I can say that i like it, but im not sure that my gun tastes are mainstream.

That and I suspect that the r51 is a good bit more expensive to produce vs plastic framed guns.  This is probably the reason why we have seen so many QC issues.  At $200, Remington is struggling to break even.  Poor QC leads to bad reviews leads to even worse QC leads to more bad reviews.  Kind of a death spiral that can only be stopped by dumping even more money into the project.  Money they dont have.  Im sure the new management from Taurus is looking at the R51 and wondering why it's still around.  Just a high cost of production offering that hasn't been able to justify itself.

The good news is that current r51s are running well.  Sootch gave some lukewarm positive reviews, maybe to be followed up by some glowing reviews later.  If the r51 can get past the youtube trolls, maybe it can start to sell.

Might be time to get ready for that big clearance sale then.

They'll replace it with a scaled down single stack rp9 that uses r51 magazines.  It will sell and work much better.
