R51 General Discussion / Gun Test magazine
August 05, 2017, 05:23:46 PM
I made a mistake and ordered "Gun Test"  magazine, and to my surprise, the first
Issue I received, (Aug 2017), had a review on the Remington R51.
I have never read such a bunch of malarkey in my life.   I have read of problems on here
that we straightened out, but nothing compared to the crap that "Gun Test" put out.
It appears that the writers know nothing about firearms, nor their workings.
They claimed that the gun would not shoot any but one brand of ammo,
Overly bitched about the trigger, and magazines.   It is obvious they  never read
R51 General Discussion.  Needless to say, I wrote "Cancel" on my first
invoice.

General Discussion / Firearm safety
June 28, 2017, 01:07:07 PM
I know I am going to get tons of flack over this, but it is what I believe, and I am entitled to
my opinion.   The proof of this lies right next door to the 2ND Amendment, which I
adhere to and believe in.

People are dying because they do not understand firearms and what they can do
if you do not respect them.  They do not understand the difference between a real
gun and a toy gun.

I firmly believe that any person who is purchasing a firearm for the first time should
be trained in firearm safety.   And required to furnish proof of that upon purchase.

Guys/Gals,
The clamp I have been using to hold the barrel on my R51,
2 Pack Irwin 58100 Quick-Grip 1" Spring Clamp,
May have injured my wrist.  I got the smart ass idea of using the clamp for
exercising my grip..  As of today my wrist is swollen and sore as all gitout.
I am going to the ER tomorrow and find out WTF.   More to follow.
Just for info.
Learning to shoot left handed now.  Cannot even squeeze the trigger on my R51
right handed.

R51 General Discussion / R51 holster
April 30, 2017, 05:23:13 PM

I went out and bought some cowhide the other day, after deciding to make my own
holster for my R51.  I do that for many of my guns.  They aren't the prettiest like
Bianchi and Triple K, but when I get done,  they work the way I want them to, or I
start over again.   My R51 stays in the holster upside down, and I know it will be
there when I need it.   Gives me something to do In my retirement years on
days I cannot shoot.
     Anybody else into leather work?

     Hey gang,
This just came up on the Ruger forum.   Just passing it along, for what it is worth.
I will say, I had one, and it ruined the finish on my 1911.

Any reloaders out there,
I had a technician that loaded my Super .38 offensive loads for me.  I never got the
specs from him for the loads.  Sadly, he was killed in a road accident.
I have 8 loads left. They were the only JHP loads that would work in
my Super .38 1911.
Is there any way I could take those 8 loads and determine how they were set up and
loaded.  Bear in mind I have never reloaded anything more than cold bud,
so don't laugh guys/gals.

Kirk,
Just read, or "Found" your review of the R51.  By far, the best one I have read yet.
As we used to say in the Navy, "Bravo Zulu".

R51 General Discussion / Shooting dirty
March 06, 2017, 12:25:59 PM
Has anybody else noticed how dirty the R51 shoots.  No matter what ammo I
put through mine,  When I drop the slide, the breech block is black!  No big deal,
but I just think it seems strange.  Maybe getting a lot of blowback?  Not having ever
shot an R51 or an M51 before, I have no clue.

Ok, Guys/Gals,  I give up.
I can't remember which of you told me what the Remington tech
said about the R51 not being designed to be racked on a full magazine load.
I cannot find the post, or do not know where to look.
Any help for an old Coot?  :<}

I entered a post about the racking problem.   I will state again,  go to the Remington
Owners manual on page 16 and 17.  on page 16 it tells you on page 16 para 5 and 6 to lock the slide
fully rearward.
Then on page 17,  para 11 and 12, (way past our Attention span), it  tells you to pull and hold the
slide fully rearward  etc.....
No where does it say you can "rack the slide with a full mag".
Like I said in an earlier post, if Remington had just said in the manual, "do not try to rack the
slide with a full magazine."  It would have saved us a lot of trouble.
But talking to Remington techs is like herding cats.

BTW: If you don't believe me, go read the manual!

R51 General Discussion / 2017 R51 review
February 09, 2017, 02:05:06 PM
FYI.
Just found this review on the web.
Take it with a grain of salt.  Some will agree, some will not.  For me, the jury is
11-1 for acquittal.  Still haven't tried the modified magazine yet.
The review is in two parts, both on the same URL.

R51 General Discussion / Take down of R51 made easy.
February 01, 2017, 07:34:57 AM
I just found an easy tool to help take down the R51 for us old farts with weak hands.
The narrator is kinda dull, but the tool he uses to hold the barrel is ingenious.
See it on You Tube

R51 General Discussion / Threaded Barrels
January 30, 2017, 09:04:16 PM
Has anybody heard any rumbles about a threaded barrel for the Gen II R51s.
That pistol at the top of the page just looks so cool with a suppressor.
I know there was talk of a threaded barrel on the Gen I but there is no sign of it
on the web now.  Hopefully some machine shop will develop one.

R51 General Discussion / Cleaning my R51
January 29, 2017, 01:52:10 PM
I finally have got a system to field strip my R51.  Took me all this time since I bought it
to figure out how to do it with old decrepit 82 year old hands.  (Very Carefully)
When I finally got the gun clean, I could almost hear a sigh of relief.  I still use my
rubber coated channel locks to hold the barrel, but after that, (after watching 6 different videos
of disassembly) I got it down pat. God was that gun dirty after 1000 rounds or so!
Gun had not been thoroughly cleaned in 5 months.  Says something for the R51 right?
And in that 5 months, never a hiccup.  But the damn gun still won't rack on a full mag!
So I lock the slide open, and insert a full mag, and let the slide slam home.  Not a problem
when I carry it, to pull the mag and put in the 7th round, giving me 8 in the gun plus two
extra mags.
