I was wondering when I would see a post from some one who bought a new R51 in the introduction section.

After you shoot it, let us know your opinion and how you like it etc.

Looks like I'll have to start watching for them at my local gun stores.

Concerning keeping your R51, I would sell it. Here is why: I do believe Remington will come out with a replacement. They are working on it.

After the replacement comes out I think prices will go down on the originals, I think the time to sell it is now.

I would place an ad for it on gunsamerica for maybe $1200.00 or more.

What the heck, ether you are a collector or your not, if not why not make a few bucks?

You can buy another gun for now and when Remington comes out with the new better replacement model R51, you can buy another one.

Thanks for signing up. I have a policy about first gen guns, I generally stay away and wait for the gen 2 version though I do wish I would have gone ahead and bought a R51 as they are kind of valuable and people are reporting here that they could have doubled their money on an original R51.

Like you, when the 2nd gen R51 goes on sale I am going to buy one. My wife has expressed and interest in taking up shooting with me at the range and I think the R51 will be a good gun for her to use as I have heard that due to it's design it is lighter on recoil.

I think you can take solace in the "fact" Remington will certainly replace it, they are most certainly being very thorough in trying to get it right the second time around. That is what I would tell them I expect due to the time you have had to be without your R51 that you paid for and thus should fully expect to have and be able to use. That is what I would explain to Remington. I mean, after all, I just bought a Springfield 1911 .45 and Springfield sent me 2 free mags and a really nice range bag, this is like 70 to 80.00 worth of stuff.

If I were Remington I would talk to people who bought the R51 and find out what they would like such as a few extra mags or maybe a really nice collector addition wood presentation case and arrange to include this stuff when their gun is returned. I would make it limited addition, only for those customers who bought a R51 and went through this long wait to get it fixed and get it back. This would gain Remington some needed respect from these customers.

I think if it were any number of other manufacturers they would have made some kind of offer to you by now to give you a refund or a credit or something. For Remington to just leave all those owners hanging for so long does not speak well for them. It does not show respect for their customers.

Being the opportunist that I am, If I had the chance to make $$ from selling it off, I would have jumped at it, as the thought would be, I can always buy another later after the R51 is re-introduced and is known to be working.

I held off in buying a Springfield XDS when they first came out because I did not wish buy a gun then be without it for who knows how long when Springfield has to re-work it. You know what? That is exactly what happened, many XDS .45 guns had problems and had to be sent back to be fixed. Now they are well known to be a great reliable gun to own and if not due to the fact I have spend way to much on guns in the last 6 months, I would be buying one soon. In fact I just seen one at the local gun store for an incredible bargain at $399.00 for a bitone XDS .45. It was a bare bones "gun and one mag" package but it was new and ready to rock. I had a tough time walking away without that gun, but I did because I had just bought a Springfield TRP Operator .45 and a colt AR15.

Nice to hear you have a original reliable R51 pistol. It may end up in fact being a collectors item but I would only "collect" a new un-fired R51. If you have been using it regularly I would just contenue to do so and not start to consider it a collector item and thus stop using it due to this.

This is non professional advice: I see nothing wrong with continuing to use your pistol if it seems to be functioning properly but I am not a gun smith and not a professional in any regard so your decision regarding this must be your own.

If you have a local gun smith you may wish to consult him but be advised he does not make any $$ from consulting, only from doing work on your gun so keep that in mind if he jumps to the conclusion he must perform work on your pistol.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for signing up and telling your story. Most offers such as you got are not real offers just people blowing smoke. If it was a real offer I would have taken it myself then bought another R51 later and another gun also.

Does not seem right for you to not have got an offer of a refund or replacement from Remington. You could press them on that and probably get something.

I am thinking about buying an R51 and making it the wife's gun, hay not a bad excuse for buying another gun, as I already have quite a few.

The felt recoil on the R51 is lower, this should make it more easy for her to shoot it.

I have no issues with recoil myself.

Wife on the other hand, does not like guns that are too much of a hand full when they "go bang".

Example, she liked my Kel-tec PF9, she thought hey this is more my size... Then she pulled the trigger [shot it at the range], it went bang and she handed it back to me and said "this thing kicks like hell".

About all I could say was, it is a 9mm and has some power, that is what makes the bad guy you are pointing it at fall down.

I could get her a .380 but I think I will try and keep to the more powerful .9mm and go with the R51 for her so it works better and there is not yet another caliber of ammo I have to buy.

The idea is for a gun that is sized compact enough for her to carry should she decide to later on. There are tons of larger frame .9mm guns with less felt recoil if it where only to be a night stand or house gun.

My son bought his wife a HK USP, what a great shooter that gun is, I can fire that thing rapidly and keep all the holes on a paper plate at 5 to 10 ft better then pretty much any other gun I have ever shot in that size and weight. When I slow down and try, I can keep every round on a paper plate at far longer ranges.

All of the women in our group that day who shot it, liked it.

For the ultimate lighter recoil 9mm I would like to try a SA Range officer 1911 in 9mm. More heavy gun, match frame, super smooth slide feel. I bet it would be a great shooter, not great for concealed unless you don't mind that size and weight, some don't but I need something smaller myself.

Reason for the Kel-tec PF9 is it fits my front pocket and that is how I carry it. I don't usually run around with my shirt un-tucked so IWB is less an option for me. I am trying it and getting more used to it in the summer though, so I can carry something larger.

My son likes to carry his SA 1911 IWB and gives me a hard time about carrying my "tiny little pea shooter" around.

According to him, that little PF9 is a great gun, you should give it to mom and get a real gun for yourself. You want to intimidate the bad guys right?, not make all of them laugh when you "pull it out"! Damn kids.....

Might have something to do with why I acquired two .45's in the last few months.

Yes, I also hope the R51 turns out to be a winner. I think it will go through a few revisions like most new guns before it is actually working as well as it should. I have heard unofficially of one revision already according to my local gun store manager. I have not confirmed this yet though.

I am kind of up in the air about buying one right away but it seems the small town I live in, the local gun stores don't really have any clout when it comes to ordering in a newer gun like this so I will have no real choice but to wait until they actually show up, unless I want to order one online. I always try to do business locally as I am a local business owner.

Great Post Barry, this is very good info. I would love to see a side by side photo of the R51 and the Ruger LC9 in a size comparison.

I would also like more details about what exactly how you did the fluff and buff job, any possibility of photos & details on this like a "how to" for people who may want to do this themselves?

I did look online as you probably did but found only one mention at a website called slickguns - see link below:

It says 1:10 twist, I have no idea if this is accurate or not as I have no way to verify this info.
