Cheap magazines are back. I just ordered another 2 magazines from Grab A Gun for $14.59 each.  I had great luck with the last 2 from Grab A Gun - much more reliable than the ones that came my R51 and the replacements that Remington sent.  I was getting tired of tinkering with those, so I ordered the additional ones hoping they're as reliable out of the box as the others.

Welcome, Road Rat.

There could very well be something wrong with the sights, but mine was just an adjustment from "target sights" to "combat sights."  You probably know what that is, but I didn't when I got my R51.  When I cover my target with the front dot, it's spot on, pun intended.  That's at 7-10 yards.  Apparently, that's the kind of shooting I'm inclined to, because this is the most accurate pistol I own.  I just point and shoot and get pretty close every time.  It's intuitive, and I think several others will agree.

Nice!  Still holds true.  Pun intended.

I still really like the R51. I am more accurate with it than my other semiautos.

I agree, Zenshot.  Despite the magazine issues, this pistol is amazingly accurate for me.  I like the combat sights, but more than that, it just hits where I point it.  The aim is intuitive for me.  Makes me keep working on these magazines to get them working just right.

Well, I hope the Grab A Gun mags work stock.  The 4 I've been working on were from Remington.  The 2 that came with the gun and the 2 replacements they sent when I complained.  I haven't received the 2 from Grab A Gun yet.

I'm let y'all know how the tests turn out.

I just ordered a couple new mags from Grab a Gun, too.

Took 4 mags with 4 different modifications to the range and came out with some interesting stuff, too.  The ones I had widened the front of the feed lips a little all popped the round straight up and jammed them in the ejection port.  The ones that worked had the tab bent to middle of the road to keep the follower from popping too far up.  All have had 2 loops (or more) clipped off the springs.

I now have 2 that work well, 2 I bent the feed lips back in a little and will test, and hopefully, 2 new ones on the way that won't need any modification.

Luckily, my wife gave me a gun range membership for our anniversary, so I can hit the range a lot more and get those last 2 right.  I am one lucky man!

This new Grab a Gun mag, is it the 6 hole or the 4 hole?

Also, dumb question maybe, but, what's holding my stock mag together?  It looks like a rivit on the baseplate.  Not a screw, not a torx.  What the heck is that thing and how do I take it out?

Thanks in advance.

Don't know about the 4 or 6 hole, but that rivet is a button (can't remember the technical name) that needs to be pressed down with something small like an awl or punch while you slide the baseplate forward and off.  It's the bottom of the magazine spring (the follower is at the top).  Just be careful because it's spring loaded and once the baseplate clears it, it'll go flying if don't keep your hand over it.

It's odd.  I bent the lip to correct the nose dives, but I may have to bend them back in some.  I am having the opposite of the nose dive, which I think is a "nose up chamber feed failure".  It's like a stovepipe, but it's a live round.  It's only happening to the last round in the magazine.

Best I can figure is that without the lip to stop the follower, it's tipping up so much that it's pushing the last round past the chamber before it closes so the cartridge ends up poking out of the ejector port bullet tip exposed.

Any other explanations?

You have a weak spring. Did you trim it? If so you trimmed too much...guess how I know?  ;D

Sadly, I did trim a couple of the springs out of the 4 magazines.  Seems I'm not the only one.   :-\  Wish I could buy replacement springs for those, but that's another topic.

How does a weak spring cause that type of jam?  Seems a strong spring would force it up that high, but not a weak one.  Unless it's a Pederson block delay/timing issue with the loading of the cartridge.

Thanks - I'll give it a go when I have some time (and patience)...

Do you have a picture of how you did it in the vice?  I'm imagining a few different ways but I don't understand how that opens up the front of the feed lips.

That's great to hear!  I am still having some problems with the magazines I previously modified, so may just get the new ones.

Welcome - from Texas.

No worries, Jug.

We're all here for basically the same reason - to get the most out of our R51's and make them the best machines they can be (at least I think most of us are).  It's the open dialogue and interaction that makes it work.

Good luck with your mods to the last mag.  And I'm jealous you can put some lead down range in your back yard.

Thought this was very interesting as well.  Explained how the springs work (number of coils versus strength).  They'll also custom make springs (think replacement springs) if needed.
