I use a DeSantis 033/75 (see below) - the strap does go over the grip safety, but does not depress it.

I reload .45 (with a Lee Progressive), .380 and 9mm (with a Lee turret press). I really like the turret press the best 'cause it's really easy to switch dies. The progressive is a lot more involved... I also load for my 40-65 and 30-06. I find that reloading is therapeutic and relaxing and it's nice to know that I'm making great ammo at a reduced price!

Have fun!

I carry mine with Ruger's ARX ammo. Works great in my R51.

Welcome! Kinda cool that you retired from the AF the same year I joined! I retired in '98 and just retired from my second career as a university professor. The R51 is really designed as a "both eyes open" pistol with the combat center hold as discussed above. BTW, I've had VERY few problems with mine - it's not my primary carry pistol (I carry a Kahr CM9 or Seecamp), but I have carried it and trust it. There are a lot of bad reviews "out there", but many of us find it to be a reliable, accurate, and (obviously) cool-looking pistol!

I posted this on the youtube vid comment section, but I'll mention it here as well... You need to use a "combat center hold" when shooting the R51. This means that you cover your desired point of impact with the dot on the front sight. Nice review, btw! I've shot hundreds of rounds through mine with only a handful of problems (and those were early on).

So, took the R51 to the range yesterday for the first time in a while... 100 rounds (handloads with a wide variety of brass)... Not a single blip! I had kinda forgotten how great this massively underrated pistol is! Accurate, reliable, and, dare I say, VERY good looking! What a great pistol!!!

I stopped using Full30 after watching a few of the videos posted by RoyalNonesuch. IMHO, that guy is truly dangerous! Does a lot of unsafe (to say the least!) things from making and firing homemade guns to (I just checked) making your own flamethrower. I asked that he be removed from the site, but that obviously hasn't happened. If YouTube keeps going the way it is, I may reconsider, but I REALLY wish they wouldn't post RoyalNonesuch's videos.

Just to add my 2 cents... I load Xtreme plated 115 gr bullets over 4.7 gr of W231 and a COAL of 1.15" and get about 1070 fps. Haven't had any malfunctions with this combo... I also use the same load in my other 9mms (Luger, Walther P1, and Kahr CM9).

One of my favorite LGS's recently dropped Big Green because of their pricing policies.

I'm pretty sure it means removing the barrel from the pistol and dropping a round into it to make sure it seats to the correct depth. It makes a "plunk" sound... Nothing to do with my user name, btw...

I second the Ruger ARX - super accurate, low recoil, and devastating on soft targets. As I said in another thread, the only weird thing is the little triangular holes they leave in paper. I use the .380 version of ARX in my PPK and Sig P238 as well.

R51 General Discussion / Re: shooting low
« on: November 26, 2017, 01:09:39 PM »
At 50 feet, mine is right on with a "combat hold" - i.e. putting the front "dot" on top of (i.e. covering) the target. It kinda makes sense that it would shoot a little low at the "normal" 7 yards, which is where I assume you're shooting(?)

I just took a look at mine and I think you could file the front sight down and re-do the dot. In fact, you could probably file it down to a post and just paint it white.

I've never had the problem you're having (and mine is an NC frame, too), but I guess a lot of people do. Have you tried locking the slide back, inserting the mag, and chambering a round and then topping off the mag so you have 7+1 and then firing it? This is probably a better way to load it anyway...
