R51 General Discussion / Re: New and Improved (?) mags
« on: Today at 08:59:27 AM »
Is there a visual difference in the "little bent portion" or can you feel a difference with your fingers?

Scurmudgeon,
No, There is not.  I think that Rem just changed the part number.  I have found out that if the mag spring is in backwards,
that it will decrease the capacity of the mag by one..
All five mags will at times, when removing the ammo from the mags, by hand, have one nose dive,  hitting the "little bent portion".
These are the most ornery mags I have ever seen.   However,   Like I said after 100 rounds each, the mags performed
fairly well, with only one nose dive on #5 mag.    It has helped to number the mags.    I take notes as to which
mag does what.    The jury is still out.  But mags #1, #2 and #3 are "carry worthy".   Just #4 and #5 are suspect, and "range worthy" .

I still like the wood grips Remington had on display at the 2014 shot show better...

SCurmudgeon,
That is a great looking set of grips, but Remington is a little too proud of them according to the price.

Just received my new and improved mags from Big Green.   Visually, no difference
in the ones just received and the old ones.   only difference is the stock numbers.
Look and load the same.  Unloading, a different story.   Trying to unload the mags
the nose of the bullets catch on the little bent portion of the mag.
I am going to the range today and will give these
mags a workout with several  different brands of ammo.
Wish me luck.

Just got back from the range.
Tried both new mags with a variety of ammo.  Hollow point, FMJ and Win USA Forged (steel).
Had one nose dive, other than that, all went well.  Jury is still out.
I engraved numbers  on the mags with a dremel.   1 thru 5.   #5 had 1 nose dive.

As stated on another post,  I received an email from UPS to expect a delivery on
Monday from Remington.   Could it be the long awaited magazines?
Will let all know Monday evening after "Big Brown" drops by.
First thing I will do is compare the new mags to the ones I now have.
Part numbers., Followers, springs, base plates etc.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Notes from a new owner

Not a "new owner" as yet, but did order one today.
Notified my dealer, Silver finish, if can be found, reasonable, both time and money, otherwise plain black.
Order wont actually hit the warehouse until Monday.

Now comes the "can't wait" period!

Chokejug,
I know the "CAN'T WAIT" PERIOD.  Post a photo of the gun when you get it.  Did you order Crimson Trace also?

General Discussion / New R51 mags in the mail?
« on: October 22, 2017, 01:09:28 AM »
I just got an email from UPS telling me I have a package coming from Remington.
Only thing I am expecting is two "new and improved" magazines.  Any body else
get one of these notifications?   I know several of us have been told by Remington
that we would get two new magazines.  Package will be here Monday, and I will
let you all know if it was  in fact the magazines.

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue
« on: October 22, 2017, 01:05:30 AM »
Hey Blackie
Thanks for your post.  Thats the odd thing... I've had the same 4 mags since I got the gun. I always load all 4 mags at once then shoot and reload them again... so they each have the same range time and were broke in identically. that's what makes me think its the gun.
I will certainly try loading only 6 the next time I go out... to see if that makes a difference but it used to hold open with 7 on every mag.  Honestly, I probably have closer to 3000 rounds thru her cause I stopped counting after the first 15 boxes. Its pretty much been a flawless gun but it won't cycle Tulammo so I only use brass. What's the chance the mag springs have weakened?  Pretty unlikely right?   ...Arlis

Hey, Arlis,
Have you tried Winchester USA Forged?   It is American made, and my R51 eats it up.    Good price too.
Springs should last a looong time according to an article I read,   Nobody really knows!

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue
« on: October 21, 2017, 07:43:03 AM »
Hello,  I'm new to the forum.  I have probably put 2000 rounds thru my R51 and although I never really had a problem racking 7 rounds...
the last couple hundred rounds the slide suddenly doesn't hold open on the last round.
I clean it every 200 rounds or so and have had the same 4 mags since I purchased it. Any ideas?
As a side note... I was told by a friend to always keep your mags fully loaded at all times (especially on the R51) to help break in the mag springs because that 7th round is tight.

Arkis,
Do you have more than one Magazine?  And, if so, does the gun not hold open with either mag?
Remington recommends to lock the slide open, insert the fully loaded magazine, pull the slide back
and release it.  i think most of us have had magazine problems.  I took out the mag follower on my mags and removed about 3/16" off
each leg.  Don't know what to tell you about the slide staying closed after the last round.   Try shooting only 6 rounds, see it the slide locks open.
It could either be a damaged mag, or it could be the slide locking lever.

Hello..   My name is Arlis and I purchased my R51 back in May of this year (despite all the negative reviews) and I love it. I happened onto your forum while looking for rubber grip panels by accident and decided to sign up to communicate with other R51 owners. I am looking forward to learning and contributing to the R51 community..... Arlis Peach

Welcome aboard Arlis,
You have come to the right place,   if you need any help, you will get it here.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Purchase a Used R51?
« on: October 18, 2017, 01:22:48 AM »
Thanks Blackie!
So that is it, the Is all were made in NC while the IIs are made in AL?

I have to call a few places and see if anyone has one or more on the line to rent.  Sure would like to shoot one before buying.

I got bit that way with a Bobreg.
Liked the design, havent had one failure of any kind, BUT it tears up my trigger finger and the knuckle on the finger next to it.

Trigger guard is too small, and my hands are too old and decrepet!    It is "supposed" to be lighter recoiling but to me, its the kickingnest 9mm that I have ever shot!

81 and arthritis ain't fun!

BTW, Chokejug is something I seemed to have to change to while signing up here.  The software seemed to think that I was a robot, and I had to chage enough things around to get by it!
My normal screen name is Jugchoke, as in the shotgun game.  And yes, I have jugchoked cylinder bore barrels, by hand.  Shades of old V. M. Starr!

Chokejug,
I went to a western store and bought a set of goatskin leather riding gloves after my R51 nibbled on my hand.   Works great now.   And for some reason
the right hand glove is not getting chewed up.  Maybe your hand will like the 9MM better with a shooting glove?
I don't really care what anybody thinks about me using gloves on the range,   Makes 83 fun!     I shoot comfortable.  If I have to defend myself, I can stand the slide bite.
Blackie

BTW, is that a Bobreg or a Boberg?  I tried to goggle it.

Funny, I just saw a couple advertized.
But they wanted virtually new price and that turned me off, immediately!

Now, it does seem like some of you guys with lots of experience here, might be fine with it.

But especially because of so little difference in price, I am going to pass!

Chokejug,
Check on the right side of the gun, if it says "Charlotte, NC, walk away, it is now made in Huntsville, Al.  Buy it
and read the comments on here.

If we hadn't talked about it on line and to our friends on this blog,  we would not have the
fixes we got!   We now have functioning R51s.  Remington has not been forthcoming at all with us.
Blackie

ha, I said not JUST talk about it online. I never said don't talk about it online. If anyone tries to tell me I can't open the hood, take it apart, or find ways to improve I say "Challenge accepted!". "No user serviceable parts" only pertains to the warranty period.

BUT I also know from common sense and experience building a workorder system from scratch at work and being the complaints funnel, I've lost track of the number of times I'm trying to find out why something is wrong, go and ask users and hear "oh that's never worked. It didn't work when they gave it to us so I never used it". Meanwhile, when I DO get feedback on the system I help support, the vendor we work with usually has stuff fixed in a few days.

Russc2542,
99% of the time you will be right,   But if you have really read the comments on here,  you will se that nobody is getting help from the vendor
Three or four of us have been promised the upgraded magazines,, yet the only person to get any was Wiley Clapp.  Who got two of them plus
ammo after Remington said they were not shipping them yet.  . That is not cooperation,  that is sucking up to the gun magazines and writers.
I did not accuse you of saying don't talk about it.

The two photos I posted of the targets were shot at a distance of 5 yards on an indoor range using a 2 handed grip.

I am still wearing a few scabs from slide bite. This is from my own carelessness. I was gripping the pistol too deep into my big paws. The effect is a LOT less than I experienced with a Sig 230 in .380.

WrongWay,
I also have "Bearpaw" hands, so I went to a western wear shop and purchased a set of light weight riding gloves.   That put a stop to Slide bite.
I have heard it said that that is not a proper way to practice because you won't be wearing gloves when the SHTF.   Well, in my opinion,  if that
happens, I will not be worrying about sllde bite.
Enjoy your new pistol,  I love mine.
