I was surprised to see the dimensions that you use to load your ammo to, especially the case mouth dimension.  I know the .380 spec is within the acceptable tolerance but is the maximum diameter acceptable.  The reloading manual I read before starting reloading told how to set the taper crimp on the cartridge this way:  First they recommend sorting brass since case wall thickness varies, and I do that.  Next is to measure the case wall thickness, and the bullet's diameter.  So, if you are using a .356 bullet and the case wall thickness is .010, the outside diameter of the crimp should be .375.  That is the bullet diameter added to two times the wall thickness since you are measuring two walls and crimping the round .001 results in the total of .375. Try loading a dummy round without primer or powder and then pull the bullet out of the case to see how much indentation is shown on the bullet to ensure you are not over crimping. You should be able to see only very slight evidence of bullet compression.  I do this for every set of ammo I load, especially when different case manufactures are being used.  The crimp does nothing to hold the bullet, case tension does that and is determined by case resizing. Over belling the case mouth too much will cause problems seating or crimping the bullet or too deep will lose the tension.  I have used this method for all my reloads and they work in every gun I have.  The only problem I ever had was with some coated RN bullets that were .358 diameter and the quality sucked.  The bullets were very inconsistent in size and weight, had slag on the bases of some, and the ogive was so fat that I had to seat them deeper than recommended.  I loaded these to shoot in Beretta pistols since the bore size in about all of them is .3575 and the plated bullets, cast bullets, or lead bullets should be at least .001 larger than bore size.

I hope this will help with the chambering problems with your reloads.

I shot my R51 with the EBay barrel and found it to be accurate and no problems of any kind with the gun function.  Of course my original barrel did not have any lands or grooves and the bore diameter was .344 IIRC. I put 250 rounds through the barrel and was very pleased with how my gun performed.  I actually bought two of the barrels and put the second one in but only tested it with snap caps and it too performed well (except for accuracy, lol). I pitched the no bore barrel in the bin and sold the gun. I loved the R51 from the first day I saw it and still do, but CS left me with the feeling that Remington could care less about my complaint and was not willing in any way to be accommadating with repair. It was the opposite of what I had experienced with them in previous relations.  Maybe my bad luck in the random selection of reps but try as I might there was no amicable resolution. And, please, I don't care to go into all the details.

Danoh,
Sorry you sold your gun.  Take it easy and drop in once in a while.
Blackie

Thanks, Blackie, I'll be here if owning a R51 is not a requirement to belong,  :D.  I have mixed feelings about my R51 experience.  I love the gun, the fact that it is a different platform drew me to it, and the looks of the gun are so cool and very functional for carry purposes.  So my "beef" has nothing at all to do with the gun, it is customer service- a part of any purchase that I consider to be a direct representation of a company's commitment to their product and promise with their buyers to back what they sell, and I feel I got a pie in the face. I still own my R1S and have no plans to sell it, it's a great shooter.   So, if you don't mind I'll hang around and read about all the goings on with all of you and the 51.

Even after all the screw ups, I can't believe that Rem would accidentally ship barrels without lands and grooves machined in.

It has to be part of the design modifications, right?

P.S.  I'd love to get my hands on a CZ82 some day.

This is no new design modification.  I don't know if you read in the other thread, but I slugged the barrel and found the bore diameter to be .347.  If it was an octagon barrel it would be .355.

DanOh,
Got my barrel today, It won't fit in the slide, the breech will not fit in the inner slide!
Wonder if I could put treble hooks on it and use it for a bass lure?
Blackie..

Doesn't fit??  That is very strange, no one else has had a problem like that.  Did you fit check the barrel in the slide without trying to put the slide together and assembling on the frame?  I took out my calipers and checked measurements of 1 vs 2 just to make sure there's no difference since I'm going to use the Gen 1 barrel in my gun.  Let us know what you find.

When I bought my R1 from Bud's there was a special offer going on at that time to provide a one year free checkup.  My R1 has been perfect and was when I sent it in, but there was a number of springs they went ahead and changed.  They also cleaned the gun inside and out.  It looked better than new when it came back.  They also replaced the rear sight because it had a mark on it from the factory when the sight was installed.  I love my R1 and shoot it regularly and unlike it's little brother, everything about it has been excellent.

Yeah, I saw TM's post and checked the brass from my last range visit when I shot the R51 with the Gen 1 barrel.  All looked good with no overpressure indication. However, you can't tell by looking at the spent primers to determine if the bullet is touching the lands.

Is anyone aware of a video on the disassembly of the R51 frame components?  I want to take my down and do some things.  I figure Remington is going to cancel my warranty anyway for not returning the gun for repairs.  I don't think it is too difficult to take it apart but it's always nice to have some backup or something to fall back on.

I did the "smoke test" on the Gen 1 barrel after reading iklawson's post about the round touching the lands of the barrel.  Using a dummy round made to a COL of 1.169, I placed the round in the chamber and closed the slide with the slide release lever.  I ejected the round and there was no evidence that the bullet touched the lands.  So I can't see how a pluck test would say any different or be as good as the smoke test would indicate. Using a telescopic gauge I measured the bore diameter at three points of the chamber and found the chamber to be of adequate diameter.  At the point closest to the lands (rifling) the diameter was measured to be .380.  I also did a pluck test with the same dummy round and it seated fully into the chamber and fell out when I inverted the barrel.  The Gen 1 barrel is safe to use and meets parameters found to be acceptable in 9mm chambers.  If anyone knows of any evidence of problems with these barrels, I'd like to read about it.  Was there anything posted anywhere about this problem?

Got the shipping "bag" and work order today.  The postman went by my house without stopping and that sent my blood pressure up a few notches.  About ten minutes later when he came back down the other side of the street he ran across the road and put a large white envelope in my box.  Just like everyone said, send it to Butlick AL for repair.  Not going to do that.  I'm going to call R tomorrow and inform them of my decision not to send it to anyone buy Remington and if that can't be done, I'll take care of it myself.  Super pissed about how they handled this.  When my 1911 R1S went back to them for a prepaid one year inspection, it went to Remington in NC.  I'm not having my gun sit for two months in some backroom until they get time to fix it.  Also, and this is a big thing to me, under Reason for Return is stated, "rough barrel bore".  I think that is an obvious attempt to hide the true fact that this barrel was not bored at all and the ramifications of the seriousness of what occurred.

A little update, I sent Remington an email on Friday asking a couple of questions about returning the gun for repair.  Nothing back, not a damn word.  When I sent the first email I never got a reply on that one either.  I ended up calling them and got some info from that contact.  This is making me feel a little agitated.  When I had a problem with my Sig I called them and they sent me all the shipping labels and instructions on overnight mail and it went out the day after.  Obviously Remington sees no reason to rush anything.  When I spoke with them it was indicated that I should have everything today, Monday 3/13 to return the pistol.

Having put over a thousand rounds through my R51 shooting through a barrel with a bore size of .347,  I don't think I'll be too worried about the bullet touching the lands.  Too, it depends of the COL of the bullet they are using, right?

Hello all;

Anyone know where I can get a schematic for the R51. I'm trying to educate myself about this pistol. After the last day at the range I stripped it down for cleaning and noticed what I think might be some internal damage. I've taken some pics that I plan on posting with some questions and want to at least appear like I know what I'm talking about.lol.Thanks in advance.

This is another issue that annoys me about Remington.  You can't find drawings useful other that parts dwgs., they don't want to sell you parts.  Other guns that I have are backed up with lots of prints and documentation.

Since I have a new barrel that works and another on the way for backup, I'm not sending my pistol in.  I'll mail the barrel back to them in the return postage packaging they send but other than that I'm done with it.  I don't think I can trust them to get the gun back to me quickly and with the stories I've heard I don't need the annoyance of getting jerked around.  The smooth barrel is not assembled and IMO I have no responsibility of any part of any violation when you buy a gun over the internet and it does not conform to laws of the ATF.  What is you bought a rifle and someone sent you a SBR without your knowledge, are you saying that they can put you in jail?  Not everyone is knowledgeable about Class III items if you have no desire to own any of them.  I'm not worried at all about what the ATF would do, to me when the gun was assembled at the factory they broke the law.
