I ran across an article on shooting technique on the Field and Stream website.  The gun in the cover photo looked familiar.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Barrel Removal Issue
December 18, 2018, 11:28:13 AM
I have to believe there is a burr or an edge somewhere that is making it difficult, but metal work was never my gift.

I use the clamp trick Blackie posted to remove the slide, but my issue is the with the barrel coming out and going in.

If there are ways of making this process difficult, I must know them all.  I haven't learned the magic words.  When you watch the Remington videos, once you get the bushing in the correct position, the pieces virtually fall apart.

R51 General Discussion / Barrel Removal Issue
December 17, 2018, 11:26:44 AM
My R51 was among the first Gen 2 releases that had reconditioned Charlotte frames.

It has never been easy for me to remove the barrel from the slide once the bushing is moved into the notch and the barrel is canted upwards.  Getting the barrel back in is equally challenging.

I've seen the videos that make it look easy, which makes me wonder if there is something sticky or edgy in my pistol that makes it more difficult.

Has anyone had a similar experience and been able to come up with a remedy?

What else where you shooting to compare?

Amen!

I just saw an article on American Rifleman that talked about the market segment for affordable guns.

The Keefe Report: More Affordable Guns

I mention this because the first gun featured in the article is the Taurus Spectrum.  I remember there was a Spectrum thread on this forum when the first prototypes of the Spectrum were released.  Funny, it was over a year before Taurus actually got around to making the pistol available.  Perhaps Taurus learned something from Remington, but I digress.  I finally got around to laying my hands on the Taurus Spectrum last weekend and I was not a big fan.  And although comparing a sub-compact .380 to Reminging R51 is comparing apples to oranges, my point is this...

There are a lot of cheap guns out there, but the R51 is a lot of gun for the money!

I'd say they aren't out of the woods yet and they have little or no margin for error.

Wow.  $260!  The R51 gives you a lot of pistol for that small price.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Magazine Drop
April 26, 2018, 03:26:03 PM
Having magazines drop out of the frame was one of the primary complaints of Gen 1 pistols.

I had the mag fall out twice on my first range day with my Gen 2.  I'm fairly certain the magazines were properly seated and that I wasn't pressing the mag release.  I was so worried i had a lemon, but it hasn't happened since.  I haven't performed any magazine mods and I shot it all winter in leagues.

Good luck.

Not THAT'S what I'm talkin' about.  That is WAY cool.

I can't wait to hear how it goes (or not hear how it goes).

I'd really like to get one of those, but for now supressors and everything else involved with purchasing them puts them out of my price range.  I was hoping there was some steam building to streamline the process in the name of saving hearing loss, but all that momentum has gone the way of the dodo.

As you've seen in other posts, some have modified the magazine followers.  Others have fiddled with the feed lips.  Magazine performance seems to be miss and hit.

Before you send your gun in, you might try either of these hacks, or report your problems to Remington and see if they will send you new mags (or both).

Otherwise, sometimes it just takes time to break in.  I made the mistake of not giving mine a thorough cleaning before taking it to the range for the first time and had a similar experience.  Subsequent cleanings and range sessions have improved the performance to the point where stovepipes or nose dives are very rare.  (I'd say they were gone, but I had one a couple of weeks ago.)

Regarding the sale of R51's, they are practically giving them away (have patience) on Gunbroker.

I would be  reluctant to buy a used R51 as the lifetime warranty does not transfer.  Magazine issues aside, some members here - who do like their R51s and don't trash them - have had significant problems to the point where the pistols needed to be sent back in for service or replacement.  I don't know if the Gen 2 repair/replacement rate is any higher than other brands and models, but I wouldn't want to pay that bill out of pocket.

I like my R51 as well and have been shooting it a bunch this winter, but for me - personally - I'm glad I have a warranty to back me up in case something goes wrong.

I use Ed's Red.  It's interesting to me from a historic perspective.  Ed's Red uses currently available materials to re-create a cleaning formula from Hatcher's Notebook, which itself is re-creating a formula supposedly from a military arsenal (Frankford Arsenal).  When I track it down, it's actually a formula going back to pre-WWI.

Peace favor your sword,

Its goona be hard tracking down the Sperm Oil referenced in your recipe link.  In fact, the government will probably start tracking me now because I mentioned sperm oil in this post.

What do you use for a substitute?

General Discussion / Re: Remington Faces Default

Remington Outdoors Company includes Bushmaster, DPMS, Remington and Marlin.  And Remington Outdoors is in turn owned by Cerberus Capital Management.

I just assumed that when Remington was filing for Chapter 11, that it was because Remington "Firearms" was hurting.  I hadn't thought to consider what portion of Remington Outdoors' financial problems belongs to Bushmaster, DPMS, or Marlin.

Cerberus will give up that ownership once restructuring is complete.  It will be interesting to see what happens to all 4 brands.

I hope the new management team knows how to run a firearms company.
