I have shot my R51 a lot (I just love shooting this little gun), and it feels it has gotten a little better racking with a full mag.

I'm starting to get the impression 1911shooter does not like disassembling his R51   :D

Gun Frog,

You are very astute!  I muddle through it about every 4th time I shoot.  I also am noticing that I can rack the slide with a full mag,
but it is a chore for these old hands.  I still "slingshot" the slide on a full mag. I found some defensive ammo called "Power Ball".  It is "Polymer" capped JHP.
Strange thing is, it is it is almost 1/8" shorter, and only 100 GR. It is +P though. Gonna try is this weekend and I'll
Pass any results along..
Blackie

BTW: I am behind the times, evidently this ammo has been around for a while.  Don't know how I missed it.

Hey 1911Shooter,
1/8 inch shorter . . . . humm the SAAMI spec on 9mm +p is a min of 1" COL. I am curious can you share what the COL is on those please.

I also am apparently behind the times. I have not heard of Power ball either. I did look it up and noticed it advertises it is designed to feed well.

Looking forward to hearing your impression on this ammo especially with Texas-Mark's observation the bullet seemed to grab the feed ramp.

happy new year

This may help your holster searching if you have not already seen it.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Major magazine failures

So I picked up my r51 2 days ago and went to the range yesterday, the first five rounds went fine then on number six the base plate on the magazine blew out so after checking the gun over well I could find nothing wrong so I put the second magazine in and shot about 30 rounds with no issues then the same thing happened the base on the magazine blew out, I was shooting Remington 115g so nothing special and no hot rounds. Has anyone heard of this happening?

Well . . . now that's a new one. Talk about an unusual magazine failure.

Am very interested in what Remington's response is. . . please share what they say about this Mike.

Hey 1911Shooter,
Hummm. . . . rubber grips from an electricians pliers. . . now there is an idea I need to remember :-)

I hear you on the challenge of that %&*#$ action spring.

Okay I'll stop cringing  ;D

R51 General Discussion / Re: Extractor Spring???
December 26, 2016, 07:56:30 AM
Yup I noticed the little green pillow spring. I distinctly remember when I saw it my brain said "Okay, lets not use bronze brushes or any none gun cleaning solvents on this".

The DPMS LR-308 rifle uses an elastomer extractor spring.

The use of elastomer springs in industry is very common, and offers some advantages over metal coil springs. One advantage is you can get more energy storage in a smaller area then a metal spring, which I would guess is the main reason for it showing up in the R51. But . . . . I'm guessing on this.

Okay there's my 2 cents :-)

Hey 1911Shooter,
Sorry, but I just have to ask . . . . cuz ya just made me cringe - are you putting something over the channel lock teeth?

Just funny with ya a little here  :)

Hey Argie1891,
Sorry to hear ya ended up with a gun ya don't like.

Since your R51 is probably in excellent condition with low round count, one thing ya might consider (if ya have not already) is a trade in. Although, I think it would be cool to have the R51 since you have the original pistol (in 2 calibers) it was modeled after.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Shootin' Low

Howdy All,
Thought I'd share my loads to add to the knowledge base. I been running 115 grain plated bullets (Range I use does not allow cast bullets), COL of 1.125 +/- .01 with 5.7gr of Hodgdon CFE and 4.5gr of Alliant BullsEye.

However, I was looking at my shooting notes and realized I have not shot my R51 past 15 yards. Seems I been missing out :-). I'll give 25 yards a try next range session.

I am impressed with 1911Shooter's 100 foot shots . . . that be a long way with such a small gun :-).

As far as the conversation on POA/POI, well, when using fixed sights ya have to find what the manufacture setup and live with it. Fortunately we have the options these days to easily make sights how we want them. I been noticing that some new sight designs are out so we can have low profile/snag adjustable tactical sights. I foresee one of those possibly in my near future.

R51 General Discussion / Re: 2nd Range Session Results

Hey Kawa,
If I came across like I am making excuses . . . please excuse my bad writing. I sympathize with those that are having problems (I waited almost 2 years to get my R51 replaced).

However, with the R51 replacement Remington has sent me, the only problem I have is with the ambidextrous mag release, and my support hand finger pressing it accidentally. I know how to fix this problem if I so choose. I prefer so far to just slide my finger down just a tad to prevent this. The gun works well for me, is reliable, and meets my personal needs.

I am a big proponent of single handed shooting and for me, the R51 is really a natural fit in my hand  - this is why I own one. . . . . well, to be fully honest,  I have to say I also like how it looks :)

Best of luck to you getting Remington to make your R51 right.

Magazine disconnect feature - Many opinions on this I have heard. I think this site states well some of the logic for it  http://safeconcealedcarry.com/selecting-handgun-magazine-disconnect-feature/.

Outside of all the tactical reasons one benefit is once you remove your mag if you did not clear the chamber, you have one more safety feature to protect the loaded gun you just put away. Fortunately we have choices so we can have this feature or not :)

Glad to see I'm not the only one that has to get use to handling the R51. I have about 800 rounds through mine now and have not had a failure in a very long time - cuz. . .  I learned not to rest my thumb on the slide and to keep my support hand fingers off the right side mag release  :)

General Discussion / Re: R51 Gen2 dry fire question
August 23, 2016, 05:46:56 AM
Hey Jake7757,
I dry fire several times a week. My R51 gets dry fired about once a week. I do not use snap caps on center fire guns. I put an in chamber laser when I dry fire at home as it prevents accidental loading.

If you dry fire a rim fire gun you must use a snap cap to protect the firing pin tip from peening.
