R51 General Discussion / Fell in love again...
« on: March 25, 2018, 08:30:26 AM »
So, took the R51 to the range yesterday for the first time in a while... 100 rounds (handloads with a wide variety of brass)... Not a single blip! I had kinda forgotten how great this massively underrated pistol is! Accurate, reliable, and, dare I say, VERY good looking! What a great pistol!!!

Haven't seen it mentioned here yet, so thought I would post. Check out the following YouTube:

General Discussion / Holster...
« on: May 20, 2017, 07:46:56 AM »
Like many R51 owners (I presume), I have been searching for a decent holster... I found one on eBay (a deSantis) that was exactly what I was looking for - it is item number 162510531362 (just search the number in the search bar). Says it's for a Beretta, but I investigated and found out the SKU was the same as the one for the R51 and popped for it. It came today and is a perfect fit. Just tryin' to help!

R51 General Discussion / "eBay Barrel" reprise
« on: April 14, 2017, 08:02:05 AM »
Well, I finally got around to putting the "eBay Barrel" in my R51 and took it to the range today. It was pretty much a good news / bad news kinda session. The good news is that I had no malfunctions using the new barrel - a trend that has now gone to 350+ rounds with no problems of any kind with my R51. Now for the bad news - the barrel seems to be lacking in the accuracy department. It was shooting low and right, so I adjusted the rear sight to compensate... It now shot to point-of-aim (but low) most of the time but sometimes threw bullets off the target (inconsistently). I thought it might be me so I rested it and the same thing happened. Switched back to the barrel that came with my pistol and the problems disappeared. Verdict: the barrel is OK for defensive purposes as it doesn't affect the reliability of the pistol, but I'm going to stick with the original until I shoot it out.

R51 General Discussion / More bad reviews...

(sigh) Saw that there were two more bad reviews posted on YouTube today... I kinda wish some people would post GOOD reviews. Oh well...

R51 General Discussion / In case you were wondering...

Hit the range (briefly) today - it was in the low 40s - to test out the cheapest ammo Cabela's has to offer, IMI... I shot 50 rounds of the 124 grain version without a single bobble. I think it's been about 250 rounds now since my last malfunction of any kind! The IMI ammo runs great - I was only shooting steel (at 25 yards) while standing offhand, so I can't really attest to the accuracy, but I hit the target every time while 2-handed and about 90% of the time one-handed. Can't really beat about 20 cents per round! I guess I REALLY need to start reloading 9mm instead of just .45!

R51 General Discussion / Range report
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:49:42 AM »
I've heard from various sources that the R51 only likes heavier bullets in higher-quality ammo - well, I decided to see for myself today... I shot 50 of the American Eagle (i.e. Federal) 115 grain rounds and 50 of a brand I had never even seen before called "GECO" (made in Germany and cheap!) in 115 grains as well. Much to my surprise, I only had one malfunction and that was with the first mag (shooting the American Eagle) - for some reason, it ejected a live round and then kept on working! I didn't even notice except for the fact that I was counting my shots and thought, "Hmmm... I coulda sworn I loaded 7 plus one in the pipe". After the last round and the slide back, I looked down and there was a live round on the ground! That was the only malfunction in 100 rounds of ammo that I assumed would have lots of problems. I am convinced that the R51 is one of those pistols that really needs a break-in period - mine has now gone through 200 rounds and seems to be functioning perfectly.

I am now ready to make this one of my carry guns as soon as my holster arrives. I REALLY like the way this pistol shoots! Light recoil, accurate, and (now) reliable.

Introductions section / Howdy from WV!

Just bought (yesterday) an R51 after seeing the price at Cabelas drop to $370 plus a $35 rebate plus a $20 coupon plus a military discount! Took it to the range today and really liked it - had a few loaded round stovepipes on the last round, but it's such a soft shooter and points so naturally that I kinda fell in love with it.

I'm a retired AF LtCol teaching at a little Catholic college in the northern panhandle of WV and have been a shooter for most of my life (except when I was stationed overseas). I'm a member of a local gun club (Lewis Wetzel Rifle and Pistol Club) and am a pretty avid pistol shooter. I also dabble in black powder (flintlock rifle and caplock revolver) and enjoy shooting high power matches with my Garand.
