R51 General Discussion / Re: Got some new mags

Well, still not 100% with hollow points. The second round from the top will sometimes catch on the indentation on the front of the magazine. The rest of the rounds in the mag feed fine. It seems like a weak spring since it works with fewer rounds in the mag.

I plunk tested Xtreme 115 grain heavy plate concave base bullets. They worked all the way to 1.165 OAL.  I use Bullseye powder and get best accuracy with longer OALs and generally set mine at 1.150.  Havenít had any problems running them in the R51.

Since Remington confirmed the serial number, you have a Gen 2.   I have one with the Charlotte frame and one with the Huntsville frame. Both were bought new last year. They are the same, so no worries.

Ran another 100 rounds through it with the new mags and no issues. Good to go.

Does it shoot low from a rest or is it something in the ergonomics that result in low hits?

Has been quiet here. Anyone been shooting their R51 lately? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

R51 General Discussion / Got some new mags
« on: September 05, 2018, 02:27:04 AM »
Got some new mags from Remington last week. I ran 100 rounds through them, including 50 hollow point and flat points that would jam in my old mags. Everything worked well with the new mags. I did not load them in a 7 + 1 configuration, only 6 +1.
The new mags have no obvious difference but the springs feel a little more firm. Maybe just because the springs are new? Anyway, theyíre working so thatís what matters.

Have always been interested in mechanical devices from cars, motorcycles and watches to firearms.
When I saw the terrible reviews of the initial R51 I knew I had to get it!  I guess I have a soft spot for the underdog in my heart.
Just picked up my R51 last night its a GEN 2 Huntsville 2 tone. Looking forward to getting to the range with it.
Welcome from Texas!  It sounds like you will like this forum - a lot of gunsmith tinkering here.  Post a range report when you get a chance.  We are always interested in how each otherís R51s are running.

I have 8 mags, from '16 to '18.  The only one I have not had to modify
is the 2018s.  Are you having trouble with nose dives or failure to feed?
Pick 2 mags, shoot them and only them, at least 4 loads in each mag.
Keep a log of which mag performs.
And whether or not the mag was modified in any way.
It won't hurt to engrave  numbers on the sides of the mag.  That is what I do.
See what happens, send me the results on the log you kept.
I will see how it goes.
Also, remember do not use the slide lock to load the gun.
Slide the mag into the gun with slide locked back.  Pull back on the slide and
release it.  Then take the mag out and replace the round that is now
in the chamber.  That will give you 7 +1    :)
Are the follower legs on the 2018 mag shorter than the earlier mags?

Your evaluation makes sense to me. If the lip tips the cartridge nose up, I wonder if the lip was added to help prevent nosedive jams. Has any of your ammo tried to nosedive?  On the other hand, mine will experience nosedive jams when using flat point or hollow points, so I suppose maybe the lip was not for preventing nosedives.

Thatís encouraging to hear about the new mag.  Neither my Charlotte nor Huntsville model has had an issue with shooting low.  Iíve had the issue with other handguns but not the R51s.
