R51 General Discussion / Discount on grips and sights !
November 21, 2017, 08:40:47 AM
Remington has discounted a good number of gun parts and accessories on their website. I ordered the wooden grip panels and fiber optic sights for my R51. With tax and shipping it was $80.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Initial R51 Experiences
August 10, 2017, 05:06:28 AM
My initial experiences with my 2nd gen R51 were even worse than the first gen that I sent back. It did eventually smooth out after a trip back to Remington and some tweaking ideas from other forum members. I do believe that these guns function better when new with hotter ammo. The 124 grain NATO round by Winchester helped my gun and now it eats anything.

R51 General Discussion / Re: More bad reviews...
April 03, 2017, 04:01:38 AM
On the High Road forum someone asked why there were no new postings on the R51. The answer from several members was, "well, the R51 has become boring reliable and there was nothing to add". Mine sure has smoothed out and it started out as basically a single shot pistol. Even a trip back to Remington didn't get it to function reliably but a little patience and time did the trick.

I had the 1st gen R51 and now own a nicely functioning 2nd gen. Though it is harder to get it wrong on the newer one I did get it on top of the spring one time. I've found that I have to be very intentional about the location of the slide stop before pressing it in.

Almost all of the leather holsters that I have for my Makarovs work equally well for my R51.

R51 General Discussion / Re: First Range Session
November 28, 2016, 09:47:09 AM
I can finally say that I emptied 7 complete magazines with absolutely no problems. Gave the Gen 2 another good cleaning and used oil instead of the small amount of grease of the last time. Must agree with the member that has posted several times that it is BEST to insert a full mag into the frame with the slide back. Then slingshot the slide.  Really pleased with the R51 now !

R51 General Discussion / Re: 2nd Range Session Results

I agree that Remington has not got all the bugs out or their is some variable with the magazines that they didn't know about till recently. The first R51 that I had was much more reliable then the second. Shot two mags through it yesterday with no problem, but the next three had at least two issues per magazine.

This one has been back to Remington and though it is better it is far from what others are experiencing as to reliability. That said, I'm going to keep shooting, cleaning, and tweaking the mags till it's better or I send it back for a refund. Never intended to carry this gun but would like to be able to shoot 50 rounds each range trip without all these feed issues.

I've been out of the country for two weeks and my R51 has been back at Remington for over a month. That is not trash talking Remington. I did receive a new R1 in trade for my 1st gen R51 and am very pleased with the R1. Heck even my first R51 was doing so much better than my second one. And yet with that experience I also bought the little RM380 which I really like, not one failure in 400 rounds.

Said all that so you'll be sure to count my 2nd gen R51 as being back for repairs. Mine was basically a single shot. Very hopeful they will send me a functioning R51 that will shoot as good as my much older R51 in 380 from the 1920's.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Registration

My 2nd gen R51 is still at Remington it has been about a month now. In an earlier post I mention the ammo that was used. Really think the problem was gun related not ammo related. One spot on the frame was not just worn but sort of gouged. Had no problems like this with the 1st gen R51......probably should have kept it!

When it comes back to me I'll post the results.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Holsters

I've found that most but certainly not all of the OWB and IWB leather holsters for the Makarov will work rather well with the R51 too. Would post a picture but really struggle with that.

Other than some old 38 special reloads I shoot only factory ammo in all of my guns. The R51 chocked on Remington and MagTech 115 grain, Fioochi 124 grain, and even some Gold Dot hollow point. Tried the first generation mags as well as the two new ones. My first R51 rarely had a problem but I'm confident that Remington will make it right.

After 5-6 failed attempts to register online like I did with the 1st gen R51 and R1, I gave Remington a call. The guy said " Yea that part is not working right now."

A notice on their webpage would sure be helpful!

I sent my 2nd gen R51 back to the factory on Friday. It was basically a single shot pistol.

R51 General Discussion / Re: R51 not dead

I was an early buyer of the first generation R51 and must have had one of the better ones. But after the voluntary recall I decided to take the R1-1911 in trade. It is a fine shooting handgun as well as the RM 380. Last week I bought the second generation R51 and must send it back to Remington. It is little more than a single shot pistol. Numerous FTE and FTF. Tried 4 types of factory ammo, two bullet weights, and both generation of magazines, same results. Now I'm not trashing the R51 as I want it to work for mainly a range gun with occasional carry duty.
