It was cheap so I thought I would give it a try.

I liked the look and feel of the R51 and it was on sale so I decided to give it a try even though I knew it had a bit of a dubious reputation.  My R51 has been pretty reliable but it does cut into the web of my hand when I shoot... which really turns me off.

Like you I was attracted to the price ( with rebate $200.) but I also liked the look of the gun. I have ran a couple hundred rounds through it and after the first cleaning have had no issues with it cycling correctly. The hand damage is not anything that I have incurred, is it recoil alone or is it related to the grip safety ?
One last item, my gun will not eject a full mag. The mag release button will not depress until one round is chambered. Anyone else experience that ?

Welcome to the forum. I know what you mean about the web of the hand getting sore. I have an old mechanic's glove, with the fingers cut off, that really helps when I shoot a lot during one range visit.

Welcome aboard! This has been a frequent squawk among quite a few reviews of the pistol online. The best remedy I can think of is like Todd proposed earlier...a glove. Other than that, the sharp edge would have to sanded off, but that would ruin the finish.

Scouts Owner,

I think the problem is with the grip safety itself, and not recoil. Recoil may play a part in it, but if the safety itself wasn't so sharp around the edges, it would solve most of the OP's problems. As far as not ejecting on a full mag, have you checked to see if you have any binding anywhere? That would be the only thing I can think of. Also, is it mag specific, or does it affect all mags??

I have three mags and none of them will eject when fully loaded. It does not keep me from carrying the gun, it is just a seven round pistol at present.
The mag release button will not depress from either side so it must be an interference issue. Has anyone else encountered this ?

I'm beginning to wonder if the release is somehow hitting on a round in the magazine. With the magazine fully loaded, can you inspect where the release cutouts are in the magazine and see if there could be any possible interference from a cartridge? Other than that, the only possible explanation I can provide would be the actual cutouts for the release on the magazine are messed up, or for some reason are providing resistance for the mag release button??????  It's hard trying to diagnose a problem when I am not looking at it. I need to go get mine and take a look see. Maybe I can do better if I see it!

Taking your advice I examined two of the three magazines, think the third is in the truck. Locked the slide open and inserted the mags full and then empty. Both cases would eject. Confirming your thoughts about interference. Began looking at the mags and noticed that the horizontal detail line at the top rear of the mags exhibited some damage from the bolt. Nicks and scratches rear to front (burrs). will take a dremel to them in the morning and let you know. Will try to attach photos. One pic is of the two mags side by side, shows some minor differences in shape caused by the forming process. Will not allow the pics, file too large.

Glad to see we are barking up the right tree! As far as pics go, try picresize.com. Easy to use, and will get your pics sized how you like them. Then, just download them again in their resized format. I think Robert has a thread stickied on here somewhere on posting pics. Try the search bar on here and see if it helps.

I also noticed the mag release issue.  However, slight upward pressure on the mag relieves the binding.  Not a biggy for me, generally dropping empties not full mags.  and if I do my hand is right there to catch it so applying the pressure is inconsequential.
