R51 General Discussion / Re: Shootin' Low
November 28, 2016, 10:17:52 PM
Every brand and weight shoot low on mine. I still have a enough failures to not carry it and the take down is far more difficult than any of the thirty pistols I own. Yet, I still want to like it. I have a Remington R1 and a RM380, both are excellent guns and neither one has ever failed. The company can build great guns.

General Discussion / Re: What's the verdict?

One of the good things about living in Dallas there are plenty of gun shops. Today I found a R51 gen 2 and bought it. I brought it home to disassemble and clean it before going to the range. I had forgotten what a chore it was to disassemble and reassemble, but a YouTube video refreshed my memory. It was very wet and lots of bright metal flakes in the slide, cleaned it up and lightly oiled it.

I went to the range and honestly I didn't expect much, the first one was such a disappointment. I took an assortment of ammo, everything that I previously had the most failures with. I ran 325 rounds thru it, hard ball and hollow points, 115, 124, 147 and some StandOne Armory completion loads. I had two failures, lite primer strikes on the first round from the magazine. There was slight bulging on all the brass and slight puckering on some of the primers. But it ran everything.

The R51 shot two inches low at five yards with all ammo except with the StandOne ammo, that hit a little higher for some reason but still below point of aim. Maybe I've gotten too used to my 1911's and Walther Q5 triggers or was just having a very bad day, but my groups were awful. My gun is stamped North Carolina and I made the dealer confirm this was a new Gen 2. I never carry a gun till I get a thousand reliable rounds thru it, so I've got a lot more shooting before my final verdict. At this point the gen 2 is more reliable than my first one, but I've added many guns to my collection since. Granted most of them are more expensive guns, but the R51 still might be a keeper, time and bullets will tell.

I see many of you have received the Gen 2, did Remington get it right? Does anyone have a R51 made at the new plant? I'm not seeing very many reviews on the web, except for RyeonHam and I don't quite trust his knowledge. I figure once it hits the stores there will be more field test, but what have you folks experienced? Thanks for any information.

General Discussion / Remington can build a good pistol
November 17, 2015, 11:04:39 PM
I was at a local gun shop yesterday and they had just got in the RM380. It was priced $369.00, probably a little high but I bought it. I took it to the range today and it performed flawlessly. I put 280 rounds thru it, three different brands of hollow points and two brands of hard ball, no issues at all. the trigger pull is long and so is the reset, but not near as bad as the Taurus Curve. It is a little snappy but manageable. The trigger pinches my finger, but so does the Walther PPK. But this is not a range gun and for a pocket gun I think it will serve me well, after a few hundred more flawless rounds.

The Remington R1 1911 is also performing very well too, really good trigger and after several thousand rounds it too has never malfunctioned. They can build a good pistol, now if they can get their R51act together I'll but one in a heartbeat.

They sent me the basic R1, in black and not the enhanced model. I have every intention of buying another R51 if they get the bugs worked out, I loved it.

I received the R1 in just over a week. We shot it over the holidays and I love it. two hundred rounds without a single failure of any kind. Remington can build excellent guns. I still have hope for the R51.

General Discussion / I'm taking the 1911 offer
December 11, 2014, 09:04:22 AM
I contacted Remington about my R51, this time they said the model 2 will be out in mid 2015. When they offered my money back or the Remington R1 1911, I took the R1 offer. From what I've read the R1 is a good gun and since I don't have a 1911 I look forward getting it. I still really like the R51, when it worked it was great. So when the model 2 comes out I'll wait for the reviews and if they really have got it right, I'll buy another one.

They are picking mine up tomorrow and I agree that the customer service folks are very professional. I hope the Gen 2 fixes the issues I had because I love the R51. Thanks for the OpticsPlanet information too!

Ok, I'm having some problems now. I'm not sure what to call this, it's like it's trying to load the next round before the last round ejected. The casing from the spent round is half way out of the chamber and the next round from the magazine is jammed. This is happening every fifth or sixth shot. Then sometimes I can shoot three or four mags with no problems, with the same ammo. So often I can't trust the gun. I'm also having some occasional rack hanging and just out of battery hanging when racking the gun empty. I've cleaned this gun more than any gun I've ever owned. This saddens me because I love the R51 for the recoil and accuracy. This is after well over 500 rounds of various ammo.
I also bought a Glock 19 and have shot 500 rounds without a single failure. But it's larger and I'm having trouble with accuracy, not to mention it's fugly. But it works. I'll give the factory a shot of sorting out my R51's issues. I'm not giving up on the gun...yet.

General Discussion / Re: Another day at the range.

I've mostly shot cheap target rounds sold by the gun range, I'll to write down what they are. A basic white box, not a major brand name though. Then I've shot 20 rounds of Winchester Train and Defend 9mm hollow points that I bought with the gun. Those were the only 9mm's they had in stock at the Academy here in Dallas. The range has a pretty good variety of ammunition I plan to try on the next trip. I'm going to get a membership there for the discounts, plus they are close and have a great staff.

General Discussion / Another day at the range.

I put another two hundred rounds thru the R51 yesterday, not one failure. I tried one handed shooting and it was a pleasure. It's a pretty light pistol and I had no fatigue or soreness in my wrist. Brought it home and gave it a good cleaning, very simple and quick. I'm loving this gun!

I shot my R51 for the first time yesterday at a local gun range. I was treated like royalty as none of the gun guru's had seen the R51 in person. I put just under 250 rounds thru the R51. I had two ejection fails that I believe were due to me not having the clip fully seated. The clip actually fell out during one fail. I learned to give it a firm pat on the bottom and not another issue after that. I found the R51 very pleasant to shoot, it did not hurt my wrist at all. Very little barrel rise, but I need to sight it in, I kept shooting low and to the left, a very minor adjustment necessary. The head gun trainer was itching to shoot it so I let him, he has vast more experience than me. He loved it and shot a much better group than me, but low and to the left. I'm way out of practice, but I hit body shots every time at twenty yards. I'm going to go back today and practice for the conceal permit target. I love this gun!

I'm new here and not sure I put this review in the right place.

Introductions section / I'm new around here

Hello!
I'm from the mountains of Virginia, currently living in Texas but will move back to the mountains as soon as possible.
I was raised around guns, my Dad served in Korea and Mother was an excellent shot with a pistol. Shooting matches and hunting was my childhood. But I haven't been very active with a gun for thirty years.
Every gun I ever had was a gift from my Dad and when my Mom passed away she left me her favorite Smith & Wesson. Since moving to a large city in Texas I wanted to get a conceal carry license and needed a gun for that purpose. After researching I decided on the Remington R51, even after some negative reviews. I brought it home yesterday and the first thing I did was break it down and clean it properly. It came from the factory way over lubricated in my opinion. Everything works smooth but I have not shot it yet. Looking for a local gun range today.
Thanks for creating this forum!
