R51 General Discussion / Good information here
September 09, 2017, 08:35:27 PM
I read about using a clamp to help disassemble and that helped very much. Thank you for the suggestion.

I had lots of sharp edges on the back of the slide from the edges not being smoothed over. I took a diamond file to them then re-blued.

Good to hear Remington came up with replacement magazines. I'll contact them about it. I did the fixes of shortening the follower legs and cutting a few spring coils. It works great but I want to see what Remington did.

I'll chime in once more. Mine could not rack with a full mag. I removed the spring and loaded the mag and it still would not rack all the way back. the bullets filled up the mag too close to the top. I cut 2 tenths of an inch off the bottom of the follower and that did the trick. I checked the spring and it was very much mashed too tight with a full mag. I removed two coils. My coils were over twice the length of the mag. It now racks and works great through over 500 rounds, no fails. A properly designed spring has a linear operating region and squashing it too much is actually damaging it. Springs don't need breaking in when used properly. They do eventually wear out from use. My opinion is that these mags were designed improperly.

I got a clamp at Home Depot for $1. Works great

I saw a video at youtube that showed someone using  a spring loaded clamp to hold the barrel for disassembly. I tried it and it works very well. I bought one at home depot for $1. The end of the clamp has a rubber overmold.

Sorry, I don't buy the breaking in of magazine line of thought. I am an engineer and have been working with springs for over twenty years. Springs have  linear tension range then the pressure to compress increases greatly. I found the coils mashed together at the bottom of the magazine when loaded.

I have many magazines for other guns and none have had spring issues. Springs don't need breaking in.

I mentioned this before. A loaded magazine in my gun cannot be racked even with the spring removed. The bullets fill up the magazine too much. I  removed 0.2" from the follower and that solved the jamming issue. I also removed 2 coils of the spring because it because the coils looked way too long for the magazine.

I did this to one of the mags and tried it for several months and about 400 rounds. Still works with no issues and easy to rack. Just did the second mag and it works well.

R51 General Discussion / Contacting Remington

I have not been able to get Remington to answer any emails. Anyone else having issues?

I also can't register online even though they say I can. No place to do it.

Is the company in a failure mode?

Hello All, I spoke on this subject before. My gun would not rack with a full magazine. What I found is that a stack of bullets is too tall for the magazine. I found this by removing the spring from the magazine, loading it with bullets and putting the follower and floor plate back in but not the bottom cover. I inserted the magazine and racked it. The bullets pushed the floor plate past the end of the magazine.

I ended up "repairing" it by cutting off about 0.2" of the follower legs. The spring is also way too long so I cut off 2 coils.

It now racks easily with a full magazine and has functioned flawlessly for several hundred rounds.

Hi all, I purchased a Galco holster that rides high when clipped on a belt. Makes it easy to sit in a car and use  the safety belt. It's a paddle type with a retention strap over the top. Made from black suede leather. Hides under a jacket easily.

To answer valvestems question,

No I did not try leaving the full length spring in after modifying the follower. My experience as an engineer and my understanding of springs lead me to remove the two coils. When springs are compressed they have a linear functioning range and then they what is called a knee point. That is where the pressure required to compress the spring rises rapidly.

In my magazine I measured the knee point before 7 rounds were inserted with a compression gauge. That is why I removed two coils of the spring.

I had the same problem of not being able to chamber a round with a fully loaded magazine.

Read my fix in the "1st round chambering" post. I modified the magazine and have put several hundred rounds through it with no issues.

Some more on my magazine fix.

I shot 100 rounds today with no failures. I loaded 7 rounds in the magazine, racked it, and fired all 7 rounds with no issues.

My fix works and I'll stick with it until Remington fesses up and fixes the mags.

The back edges of the slide were also quite sharp. i broke those edges and re-blued them.

A bit more information on my magazine.

I examined a magazine more closely by removing the base plate and spring then loading 7 rounds in the magazine. The magazine was then inserted in the gun and the plastic retention plate at the bottom was flush with the bottom of the magazine. As I racked the gun the retention plate went beyond the end of the magazine. This is the cause of the binding with 7 rounds loaded. If the base plate were inserted, the retention plate would have jammed against it.

My fix was to removed about two tenths of an inch from the four fingers at the bottom of the follower. I also cut the spring short by 2 loops at the bottom end. I can now chamber a fully loaded magazine. I tried it at the range with four magazines worth of ammo and it worked nicely.

This is my fix until the factory comes up with a real fix. 8)
