R51 General Discussion / Re: problems with r-51

you are full of shit.. I was not trying to convince anyone of anything it when several people have sent their pistols in for repair and still say it is a good gun something is wrong; tell you what I will no longer be a party to this forum. not because I am afraid of what you or anyone else says because you want to read into my post what ever you want to . I don't know why there are no vote from those who sent their pistols in for repair but it is not my fault they haven't posted on the poll. we both know several members of this forum have sent theirs in. If you must ask I voted for not trusting the pistol at the present time to carry for self defense or protection. and I am not the only one who posted that.
now for your information color me gone I don't need  a bunch of excuse makers I am going to lock the poll and I am no longer on this forum I hope that Remington comes up with a fix for the pistol because as I said it looks great feels pretty good. it just dosent work well. again you are full of shit and that said I bet the moderator will ban me. that will be the first time it has ever happened to me. and this is the first time I ran across a group who make excuses for a gun that has serious problems.

i don't expect anyone to say they have problems if they don't.. but I have read enough posts about those who have sent theirs back to know there is for sure and certain more than a few who have had problems. I actually like the looks and feel I just don't like the way it functions. there is no way I could currently carry it for protection, and at this point could not and would not advise others to. now all I really want is a fix for the problems.
my pistol currently jams less than when new possibly because I am shooting a lighter bullet but it still fails to feed half a dozen times a box of ammo or more. 5 times out of 50 is getting close to 10% where I went to school. the Remington looks great feels great functions not so great. it shoots low but to me that is not a problem low but not low enough to cause a problem and I am pretty sure I could find a load that brings it up. it just seems that every time I post someone takes me to task. I am actually just disappointed a wait of over 2 years and then it took a month after they were on the market again for me to find one. as I said earlier I much would rather have the problems fixed than selling putting in the back of the safe in a dark corner. I have been shooting for almost  60 years and own over 30 handguns and never had a problem like this. maybe I just expect to much. I understand the first issues problems and Remington did the right thing in replacing them, but I figured the second issue would be worth the wait. maybe before it is over it will be. maybe someone out there has found a magic bullet that functions all the time if it is out there I would like to know. anyway I don't hate the gun I hate that it doesn't function properly.

ok I am pretty much done I don't really give a hoot what Remington thinks I was looking for my own curiosity how many of the 98 members have had problems. it seems to me that there are a lot of people who don't want to admit they bought a handgun with problems... I will take the easy way out if you don't like my posts all you need to do is not read them. for that matter I will just opt out. I really thought if we ( I mean the 98 members on this forum) knew the problems it would be interesting. looks like you are not interested so I have no problem with that. from what I have read there are 177 topics and 713 posts and the vast majority of them are about problems. how many of those 98 are truly 100% pleased with the Remington model 51??  I don't think I have really said anything that offensive but if I have just ban me from the forum. when I post someone seems to always make an excuse for the product. Or tell me I seem to expect too much I want mine to work and work 100% of the time I waited 2 years or so for this pistol, and got a bit disappointed. it is just that I really expected more than I got. it should be at least as good as a Jennings was.

you can change your vote. for some reason those who have had problems have chosen to not vote.

I think it is important to know how many of us have had an issue of any kind there are over 90 registered members on forum. I believe it would be helpful to know the percentage of pistols with problems and our results. maybe I will forward this post to Remington after the poll completes.

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue
December 23, 2016, 01:36:45 PM
maybe my point wasn't taken the way it was meant... when I buy a new pistol I expect a short break in period, but having to come up with a solution to every problem is a bit too much to expect. so far we and I am included have come up with a solution to the 7 shot not feeding with racking the slide. heck it is easy  load 6 or have the slide locked back, neither are really a fix. now the sharp edge on the rear of the slide it has only drawn blood once, but has scraped the web of my hand several times.
my real point is I think the design team at Remington could have and should have done a better job, They had a lot of time to work out the bugs it seems they didn't learn a lot from the time spent between the recall and the new issue.
it is really my fault I expected the 2nd issue to be perfection and it is far far from that. argie1891

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue
December 23, 2016, 03:04:13 AM
I really like the great ideas that have come up like the wooden block to help in takedown. the issue I have is Remington should come up with the means to disassemble the pistol. I have read many excuses on this forum, like the type of ammo only closing the slide with the slide stop when loading 7 rounds etc. my issue is there have been many excuses made by some for a poorly designed pistol. it should work and work with all reasonable ammo. the slide should be able to be pulled back on a loaded magazine. what about those who want to carry with an empty chamber point is it is a 7 shot pistol and we should be able to load 7 rounds. the slide shouldn't cut the hand with firing the pistol. at least Remington could have rounded the back of the slide. with most loads it shoots low, actually I haven't found a load that shoots to point of aim. about the only really good thing about the new improved Remington model 51 is that it looks great. looks however don't mean much with a pistol that has massive problems. lets quit making excuses for Remington and tell it like it is....... these pistols have issues that are not fixed yet. Now for those of you who really have a trouble free Remington more power to you, for the rest of us well lets just admit the problems. I bought mine because I own the older m-51's in 32 and 380 acp and to carry for protection I cant carry a pistol of less than 100% reliability so mine is sitting in the safe wasted money. argie1891 aka Joe from selah wa.

wow it is hard to believe all the problems with the Remington r51's I know I am not pleased with mine. I would like to take it apart to clean it again but I had to get my son to help me last time and it took both of us. I have arthritis in both hands and there is no way I can pull that damn spring back. I really wanted my r-51 and am very disappointed I expected more from Remington. maybe they should recall all of them again and make an effort to really make them work. it is possible to work around most of the problems like making sure the slide is back before loading, loading only 6 rounds, not using hollow point ammo, but there is no way we should have to make excuses for the quality of a Remington product.  they should work and work all the time and not have to mess with half measures.

I have never heard of a model of firearm with as many problems as the model 51 Remington. from what I have read there have been a large number being sent in for repair. for a pistol that has been recalled once and supposed to have the bugs worked out it dosent speak well of this model. I have and still think Remington is one of the best firearm manufactures out there. I will keep my m-51 to go along with the 32's and 380 model 51 pistols I own just to have a set, but it wont get shot a lot. another issue is the slide wants to cut the web of my hand it only drew blood once but someday I will put the slide in my mill and round the back of the slide a bit. it is way to sharp. I will use the mill so I can get both sides the same and have it look like Remington had a better idea.

My R51 excels in it's intended role as a small carry pistol.  Fun to shoot?  Got nothing to do with that mission.  As long as this pistol reliably shoots the entire magazine it's fulfilled it's mission.  A reload is carried but shooting a complete magazine in a defensive situation is unlikely.  If I was expecting to fight hordes of attackers I'd be carrying my M4 Carbine.

Never considered this as a range pistol and if it fails at that (see above) I'll still keep it.

if I gun is fun to shoot it gets shot and any pistol you are going to carry when your life could be on the line needs to be shot and shot often.. but as I said in my post everyone is allowed to have an opinion. I would carry the r-51 but why when I isn't as good as other pistols I own that (  are more fun to shoot ) more accurate as powerful and easier to control for fast shooting.

I have shot several hundred rounds through my R-51 and even though I have the bugs worked out it is not worth the money. now some will not like this post but it is my money and my opinion. I have 4 old model 51 Remington's 2 380 and 2 32 acp. and really like them. the new Remington just isn't what I expected. the recoil is excessive for a 9mm. it shoots  low the slide sometime cuts my hand, and really isn't all that accurate.
maybe it is because it just isn't a fun gun to shoot. I am sure I cant get back anywhere what I paid for it $380.00 so I will put it in the back of the safe and someday when on of my kids needs or wants a handgun I will give it to them. I trust the pistol to function and work for self defense it just isn't as good as several other hand guns I own. please everyone is entitled to his or her opinion. if you love yours it is ok with me.

there is no way you can say the Remington r51 is as easy as the 1911. first the spring is so darn strong it takes a gorilla to take down. then in putting back together well the same thing. and that flat spring that has to go on top of take down pin takes 3 hands and a screw driver to get it into the correct position.  I wanted to love the Remington as I own 4 of the original model 51 pistols and really like them. the new one is ok but not great

The early problems I had with this pistol seem to have solved themselves by shooting and breaking it in.
now that said I feel it is a pretty good handgun, but it will never be my favorite. accuracy is ok for a self defense pistol but certainly could be better. the back of the slide wants to cut my hand with the sharp edge. recoil seems to be no better than any other 9mm even though it is advertised as being softer. The take down and re assembly is a bit harder than most handguns. that damn spring takes all the strength I have. It looks good feels good in the hand, but just doesn't make an old revolver guy jump with joy. argie1891

so far I haven't rounded the sharp edge at the end of the slide. was wondering if the factory warrantee would be ended with any modification. when I do round the sharp edge I am going to put the slide in my mill and actually put a nice radius on it as I really hate to have the blood run down the web of my hand. the worst pistol for hand eating is the walther  ppk I don't ever want to shoot one of those again.
