Title: 1st range trip...
Post by: Zorba on July 31, 2019, 07:15:33 PM
Just got back from the range.

Bottom line: 1 FTF in 50 rds, 3rd round was nosedived in the mag , I'll try the a bit of smoothing of the "front projection" first.

I've had far worse problems with better regarded guns when they were new - BUT - not this type of malfunction.  I had tried several things that I had read about in an attempt to induce a failure and it passed those just fine, but "random round" in the next to last mag didn't feed and I wasn't doing anything "special" either way.

Otherwise, the gun ran fine. Next time I'll A/B it with my LC9s and see how they compare. Now I get to go clean it...

Did the first disassembly/reassembly/cleaning.

Encountered a problem that NOBODY addresses, and NO video covers. I'm still not 100% sure what was happening, but APPARENTLY the bbl was rotated out of plumb and thus would not permit correct slide re installation. It also tended to push the breechblock assy such that its rear edge would ride up (relative to an upside down slide) and prevent the lower from sliding on.

Fussy to work with for sure - but I'm sure it'll get easier with practice! Still better than a Ruger Mark series, I own a Mark III.

I use the upside down method of reassembly. Just make sure the ejector is positipned properly to enter the slide. The R51 is my favorite pistol.

Yea, that's what I was doing as well. Upside down makes more sense...

Despite the reassembly issue, the R51 is still my favorite pistol. Shame Remington discontinued them.

2nd range trip. Zero problems. I had smoothed the inside edge of that weird little front lip on all 5 of my magazines (2 original, 3 more that I purchased since the 1st time to the range). Whether or not that had anything to do with the FTF that I experienced the first time out - who knows, but it obviously didn't hurt.

The "DangerCo" trigger feels better in the regard that there's no side-to-side play - but as others have noted, it *does* appear to increase trigger weight slightly. Still, the overall trigger feel is quite good, no grittiness, no stackup, breaks cleanly. I wish it were chamfered/rounded on the corners, and I wouldn't complain if it were serrated/grooved as well - but a nice improvement all the same.

I was doing an A/B comparison with my Ruger LC9s - and I do have to say that I shot the LC9s better, even though its a smaller gun. Probably due to the fact that I'm used to it, plus a far lighter trigger; I'm still getting acquainted with the R51. Recoil felt about the same between the two, with the LC9s perhaps a bit softer due to its polymer frame. *shrug*

I'm NOT used to the ambi mag release! Both range trips I managed to press it inadvertently from the RH side - all of a sudden my full magazine is dropping to the floor!

I would not have expected the LC9s to have a softer felt recoil than the R51. I haven't tried a LC9s though.
