Post by: Rog54 on March 04, 2018, 01:04:19 PM
Any of you guys using Ballistol?  I have begun to try it.  using it on my reloading press and other things around the house.  Kinda liking it. Have not tried it on my guns yet.
Any comments about it?

I and many others use Ballistol on Black Powder guns because petroleum based lubes get hard like asphalt when using them with BP. While Ballistol is good stuff I think I would stick with regular gun lubes on your firearms as it lasts much longer and smokeless powder doesn't harm it as much.

I did try Ballistol years ago when I first started shooting and buying guns and was told that if I was going to use it I needed to use it often. Some of my Cowboy shooter friends use it for all their guns and they say the same. If you keep the gun "wet" Ballistol is fine. The problem is on an auto loader "wet" means spray and that spray usually ends up in your face.

I wouldn't use it for that, but that's just me. It'll work but why use it when there are so many better options for smokeless guns.

I use Ed's Red. The stuff literally melts carbon instantly. It is also mil spec. I found it in Hatcher's Notebook and a couple of good article's with recipes online. Great stuff and better than Ballistol.

I assume Ed's Red breaks down lead and copper as well?

Yes sir. It will give you the shiniest possible bore. I have had good success with it over many years.

Ballistol works fine.  I use it for cleaning guns I shoot corrosive corrosive ammo in and in my ultrasonic.  I like the smell of it too.

I'm a fan of Ed's Red but there isn't anything in it which has any specific application for copper or lead.
