Remington Discontinuing Significant Product Lines
This is sort of a new gun announcement in reverse. I expect to see Remington announce a reduction in the number of guns offered at the show. Based on a number of reports I've heard about management changes (it hired the former Taurus CEO) and its junk bond status sinking even lower suggests the company is in financial trouble. Remington recently offered rebates that, when combined with retailer discounts, drop the price of some guns below that of Hi-Point. This suggests to me that the company is dumping inventory to try to get some liquidity. Some of these guns, once sold off, may not return to the company catalog in 2018.
Granted, this is just somebody's guess, but it could happen. Your thoughts?

Seriously, if someone were to put away a Gen1 and Gen2 in NIB condition, I bet they would be a collector's piece someday. How many Gen1's are going to be on the market?

Value of antiques is often based primarily on scarcity. There were items manufactured by the thousands that no one kept or preserved in good shape, and now they command big prices. Action Comics #1, for instance. The first run was 200,000 copies, but hardly anyone kept them in good shape (50-100 copies estimated to exist), so a copy sold in 2014 for $3.2M.

Do you have a Gen 1? I thought they were all recalled, but I could be mistaken.
Now here's a collector's pistol. Only about 200 made.
Gen1 recalls were voluntary, so I'm sure there's a few out there in the wild still.
Mine's a Gen2.
I think I read earlier in the posts of this forum - or perhaps other sources - that was a person or two that didn't have problems with their Gen 1 and hung onto it, but it wasn't many - and those folks aren't talking about their Gen 1 experience now.
I would be very wary of a NIB Gen 1 - even as a collector's piece.

I collect mil surplus WWII rifles, I know what NIB or still wrapped in cosmoline means. Lots of $$$$. That was my intention with the next purchase. Leave it alone.

Predicting collector value can be a crap shoot. In general scarcity drives a price up. But equally important is the intrinsic value of the object.
If you find a 1903 Springfield wrapped in cosmoline, you know you have a high quality rifle in pristine condition built at a time when the working parts were hand fitted. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
If you buy an unfired Colt Python with a 6" barrel, you are investing in a pearl of great price that will be the envy of all your friends.
If you have a R51 Gen 1 NIB, there is a good chance the magazine will fall out of the frame when you close the slide.

LOL! ;D So true. Actually SCurmudgeon, those are California compliant versions. They are trying to keep folks from shooting too fast. Remington wanted customers in Cali to feel like they owned a semi auto, but in reality they had to engineer it so it would fire one round at a time. However, being that it is the only single shot automatic ever made it should be worth quite a bit in the future. Especially since so few survive! ;D ALOL!!!!!!
Remington has a pretty extensive product line with their long guns. Hopefully the handguns won't be cut. There are only 4 basic handgun models that Remington currently offers. I'm sure the rebates were intended to generate some quick cash for an imminent debt restructuring.
At my age, I can't wait for something to become valuable! I'm kind of an antique myself!
I too, believe that the R51 is a handgun that time will vindicate; and that some of those who hate on it today, will want one at some time down the road. JMHO.
