Has anybody else noticed their grip screws getting loose after an extended shooting session?
My little O-rings got trashed taking the factory grips off and putting on the teak grips.
Wonder if Remington will sell us some spares?
Or maybe just some Loctite?

Arlis,
Thanks, but the 1911 screws are almost twice as big. I sent Remington an email about getting spares, but no answer.
I will try Ace, or Home Depot next. Once the little O-rings go south that is it.

Wow, $4.40 for an O-Ring.
If you have a Family Center, Farm and Home close, try them.
Mine has an unbelievable selection of "O" rings.
Hi Guys, My grip O rings did the same thing when I changed the grip panels. ACE Hardware has a really large selection of O rings. I found the right size and fixed things right up. FRED

Ranger,
Thanks, a bunch. My screws have a tendency to get loose when I am shooting.

I'm going to have to take a close look at mine. I don't remember seeing any o-rings when I changed the grips.

Dutch,
They may have stayed on the screws. That is what the o-rings did on my gun.
I still check the tightness of the screws every time I come back from the range.

I just looked closely for the grip screw o-rings. They are not present on the screws holding the new wooden grips, they are not in the box where I put the factory plastic grips and I would have seen them if they fell out on my desk when I changed the grips. A close look at the screw looks like the screws are so short that there is not enough length on the screws for an o-ring on them when holding the grips. Is it possible that they were not on mine from the factory?
For those of you who have seen them, are they actual tiny rubber o-rings or metal washers?.
Dutch,
I just got an order from Numrich, and the O-rings fit the screws. but they
are so small. I shot both Blackie and smokey last weekend, and the screws on
the left side of the pistols were really loose. In fact, I lost one off Blackie.
I think that the upward kick when we fire causes the screws on the left side
of the grip to loosen when the gun recoils upward.
The upward recoil would have a tendency on the right side to tighten
them. Just my opinion.
Maybe if the left side screws were left hand threads?

Closest o-ring I could find that should work is 4.5mm x 2.5mm x 1mm. I ordered 100 for less than $5 and of course they come from China. I wouldn't dare use them on any of my engines but I think they'll be more than adequate for keeping a grip screw tight. I'll let you guys know how they work when they get here, probably in 3 to 4 weeks :'(

I haven't taken mine off yet; wouldn't a common split-ring washer work?

My thoughts, too.
Peach2K,
I found them on Numrich. They are a little proud of them but
they fit the screw and haven't worked loose yet.
Of course I applied a good dose of Loctite.

NH_shoots,
That is where I found my screws and washers. Thanks for the time.
The site says "out of stock", guess I bought the last 4! :(

Cameron,
I am not sure if a lock washer isn't too thick on that short screw. But if you could find
a longer screw, that would work. The thickness of my new grips from Keefer
will accommodate a longer screw.

Being a newbie, this might be heresy but...I had a Sig 229 and in changing over the grips, the grip screws walked away. To temporarily aleve the problem I went to Ace (the helpful hardware place) and I guy really helped me in getting a decent and attractive set of temporary grip screws that became permanent. Now, in fairness, I have not looked at the R51 screws but maybe even for a temporary fix. Plus, I think I paid all of $1.20 for the whole rig and probably less.
I thought I had the grip screw size figured out to be a 6-40 but now that I received them I discovered I was mistaken. Apparently they are a M3.5-0.5 thread. I can find taps and dies for this thread but can't find any screws to save my life. Why Remington would use this odd ball thread is beyond me. Had they used a M3.5-0.6 thread we'd be crappin in tall cotton as they're the most common and easy to find. I think If I lost a screw I'd tap the frame to a 6-40 and call it good. Also, the 4.5mm x 2.5mm x 1mm thick o-ring I mentioned earlier in this thread works perfect as a replacement.
Todd,
Numrich has the screws and washers.
