Any word on when or if wood panels will be available for our R51's
Really Jake? The R51 is concealable, the only people who see it is us who carry.
But I can see what you are saying. You should see some of the grips on my
1911s!
Some of my pistols (1911's included ) give a better grip with a flat wood profile. For me it's all about how well I can get a firm purchase on the handgun. Here is a link from a couple years ago that shows the R51 with wood grips, they almost look like a inlay so that might work for me.

I found the side panels to be a little slippery at times even though they have an aggressive pattern to them. I took my panels out and covered them with Talon rubber grip material. You can buy a 5" x 7" sheet of the rubber directly from Talon. I really like the purchase of the grip now. I also put a section over the front of the grip, it was eating up my pinkie finger.
Good to know about the "sheet" availability!
Got to get some!
Thanks!
I ordered and received from Remington some wood laminate grips about a month ago. Here is the link: https://www.remington.com/shop/R51-Laminate-Grips/p/19996
The grips have a very slight bulge in the center, so they are not flat like the original grips, but they feel good when gripping the gun. I coated them with tung oil and they look great ...
I wonder how the Black & White G10 grips would look with the Smoke Silver* version.

* I went to the Remington website to look at the Silver Smoke model again and couldn't find it. I did a site search, found the page, and it that model is shown to be unavailable. That frame option must have been a limited edition run.
I still like the wood grips Remington had on display at the 2014 shot show better...

SCurmudgeon,
That is a great looking set of grips, but Remington is a little too proud of them according to the price.

Yeah, and the $44 grips isn't aren't the ones pictured from the 2014 shot show. They are the ones with the stamped "R".
And now that I look at the custom grips from 2014 I realized why I really like them so much. If you squint just right, the smooth wood and checker pattern becomes a stylized "R", which to my imagination and taste was very innovative and cool looking on a pistol with bold styling. I'm sure some Big Cheese said,"No, just stamp the Remington 'R' in there. It'll be cheaper."
Here is a picture of the grips on my R51, which I coated with Tung Oil.
Wow, nice! That looks much better than the Remington website picture.

Hi Jake, Ref. to the wood grip panels, go to E Bay and type in "Grips for Rem. R 51" It list several wood panels as well as many others. I got the checkered walnut ones. They're a little thicker and really look and feel nice. FRED
Just ordered "Big leaf Wester maple" grips for mine.
Wanted to lighten up the black a little.
In my opinion, what is needed is a grip that will make the gripping surface wider and somewhat slip-resistant.
What I would REALLY like is a wrap around rubber grip that would keep the grip safety depressed, but I doubt that any manufacturer would want to take on that kind of liability. 8)

Just got my new Keefer Grips. Teak wood light tan, hand made, and they fit my R51 like a glove.
Feels like a real grip now. Can't wait to see how my accuracy is with them on the gun.

Teak Wood Item ID: 142547454708
And I just finished and installed my Western Big Leaf Maple panels from Keefer as well!
Now, a stylized R, or my initials, carved or in checkering would totally finish the job!
