Those companies that first came out with a 9mm and then tried to "upgrade" the basic pistol to .40 have usually struggled greatly.

Just getting this action to 9mm took some doing!

With all the raping the company has been through, its a surprise that the company has survived at all.

They make some crap shotgun ammo as well!
I have seen literally hundreds of split brass on especially 28 ga, and some .410.

What happens is that they try to run the brass case head through the very last forming dies, and its already been too "work hardened" by the previous forming without any anealing.

Thats on their "preimium" shotgun ammo.
AA or Double A loads.

They came to the point where they couldnt make anything but crap guns and have been approaching that same point with ammo for quite a few years now.

And there is some signs that Rem is following in their foot steps.  Guns for sure the past few years! So, the R51 startup is kinda par for the course.  I had hoped for the better.  But I have enjoyed the challenge getting these things running as well.

At least Rem still makes one peice shotgun shells.
That is a bigger deal than it sounds.

Back when Win switched over to separate base wad, multiple piece hulls, they cost at lot of people gun barrels.  The base wad would come loose and go part way out into the barrel.  Win never admitted a thing and just quietly designed a sort of fix.  Then swapped all of their production to being like the Euro trash ammo.

I lost one barrel on an autoloader, but that was from a Federal paper base wad hull.

Plus, I have a couple of those two clip models, and while they are comfortable, they are a PIA to get and keep adjusted.  From here on, its single, centered clips for me.

Now, one pure kydex holster that I recently acquired worked well, but was UNcomfortable!  So I added a leather backing.  Great! Super!

Found out how IWB holsters should be built!
Way better than leather only, kydex only or the so called hybrids as they are made today.
If I was younger, it would be a good business.

That new tech, namely bullets has completly out ran it, making it totally useless?

But then, the new bullets help the .40 as well, but possibky "over-kill" for SD.

Then call it a big game load.

Most of it does ring true, (other than his proof reader missed a spot or two).  Double negative, contractions, etc.  Easy enough to figure out just which he was trying to say.

Funny that he should mention Ithaca though.

I have my dad's old Ithaca Side by Side, twist steel 12 gage shotgun.  Made just about the time he was born, 1901.  Early in it's life, it went to Africa with a missionary, and which, some time after, dad acquired it from an older cousin.

I inherited it from dad back in 1966 in good working order.  I used it a bit, maybe up to ten or twelve years.
Then after at least a few months, or maybe even a couple of years, I attempted to use it again.

Nope, one mainspring was broken.  Apparently not during use, but during just storage.  Something this spring guy said he had never seen in 30 years of working on guns.  Claimed that such could never happen!

Granted, it was older than likely 99 percent of the guns he usually works on.  The main springs in this piece are leaf springs, and virtually unavailable.
So, I ordered about the right width and thickness spring steel strip, (wanted to keep the necessary forging to a minimum, for lack of equipment).

Had to cut, taper and thin in a straight piece, and then, heat & bend just under180 degrees, quench and temper.  Flat V spring.

Polish, (no nicks, gouges, etc allowed), and install.
The first one broke immediately, too brittle, not tempered well.

The next one is still in the plus 100 year old gun, as is the matching, (mirror image), original one powering the other barrel.

Would I do it again?
Only if I had to do so, of course.

This gun, along with my great grand father's J Manton and son's, also 12 guage SXS, will be passed down to my own great grandson, the 14th generation of my family on this side of the Atlantic.

And "snipping" spring loops when the problem is more likely the recess in the follower not letting the compressing spring to enter smoothly?

I am a firm believer in doing nothing, until a particular magazine fails to perfom well.

And then, and only then, very carefully try to figure out just what might be causing that particular problem.

Modifying just on account someone else had a problem with theirs is asking for worse problems.

It appears that there is any given number of DIFFERENT problems and just modifying helter skelter may do more damage than good.

I surely hope you had particular reasons to make the said alterations.

The reason for dedicated holsters and operator screw up.

Yesterday, while helping my wife with the recent hip replacement, out of the truck, and my hands overfilled as well, i had a dumb accident.

No excuse, and plenty of luck, the second R51 in a non-dedicated holster, (pocket type), slipped out of said holster, landing on the concrete xriveway.

Damn!
Good thing is that it passed the drop test!
But not so good for the finish!

I still had a good hold of the holster, but didnt block tbe gun from seperating from it.

I had removed it from the pocket hours earlier and had it in the console.  Just thought I would carry it into the house.  Wasnt careful enough.

Anyone else getting the idea that this mag design was not for this gun when it started?

I think they started with some existing mag and just modified until "it sort of worked"!

Anyone have the Rem 380, the high $ company that tey just bought ought Rorhbaugh or something like that?

Well, Rems new version of that gun uses a mag with a full length spacer welded into the back of it.
I am sure it was Rorhbor's 9mm mags just reworked.

Maybe the original company did both that way, as I believe they made it in both 9mm and 380.

Nope, no problems here.

But I believe we did have another guy on here that did.
He first thought it was a gun malfunction, until he figured out that was himself causing it.
Only a few weeks ago, shouldn't be hard to look up the posts.

Funny, I spent my working years in metals technology, mostly different types of welding.

Started out under the hood, and ended up a senior welding engineer.  That is with no formal schooling beyond high school.

My relationships with PHDs was a bit harried.
30 or 40 percent, maybe, loved me.  When they had something they wanted done, I got the call.

The other 60 or 70 percent were pretty stand offish!
This was in weapons research and production.
Nuclear weapons, that is.
