General Discussion / Re: 9MM Hand Load for the R-51
September 03, 2020, 12:00:15 AM
I took my chronograph to the range the other day and the 5.0 grains of Universal Clays, with the 115 JHP clocked 1058. I can only assume that the stats on the powder can were from a longer barrel.

I noticed that my gun does not like long bullets. I bought a box of Browning 115 FMJ and you could see that the bullet had an overall length that was visibly longer than the other ammo I had been shooting. Jams galore. Same thing with some old Winchester FMJ I had laying around.

That may be why my gun seems to prefer hollow points, which is fine with me.

Tonight I loaded 50 rounds of the same recipe but used some 115 FMJ that I had. The bullets have a conical cavity in the base and I seated them to the same overall length as the JHPs I had been loading. I figured that the cavity would provide some extra room for the powder if I seated the bullets too deep. I'm going to try them tomorrow and check the cases for pressure.

I found a recipe on a container of Universal Clays powder that I had left over from loading Shotgun shells. It calls for 5 grains for a 115 grain bullet.
I have a couple thousand 115 JHP bullets that I picked up at an estate sale.
I use CCI primers and scrounged and tumbled range brass. These function fine and an added bonus is that they shoot to point of aim. Most ammo shoots low in my R51. The container listed 1145fps for velocity but didn't show the barrel length. I haven't had a chance to chronograph them from the R51 yet.

Thanks for all the info. I just got settled back up north with my new R51. I plan to start working on some of those issues, if I can just stop shooting it long enough to get started.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Where are you

Martha's Vineyard Massachusetts. And I'm living proof that not everyone here is a rich liberal!
I winter in Florida which is where I got my R51.
You can't buy one here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts. The State dictates what firearms we can buy.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Grips?

I bought a set from eBay. They come and go but I just saw more listed two days ago. I like the palm swells and the way they look. Decent price too.

Mine's the same. Doesn't seem to be a problem except for cosmetically, but it falls into that "Things that make you go Hmmmm."

R51 General Discussion / Finally got to the range
May 10, 2020, 10:12:18 AM
I've had my R51 for about 3 weeks now and wanted to share my impressions of the gun after finally locating some ammo and getting to a range.

When I first got it, it seemed very stiff and somewhat "gritty", for want of a better term.

I disassembled it, cleaned it (Remington must have test fired mine as it was a bit dirty with powder residue) and lubricated it with Tri Flow. I must say the re-assembly was both frustrating and painful, but I got it done. I then cycled the action perhaps a hundred times and it felt much better.

I loaded a magazine, chambered round, topped off the mag and put it on the bureau and went to bed.

The next morning, I attempted to remove the mag and it wouldn't budge. I tried working the slide and got it about halfway to the rear and that was it.
Eventually, I pushed the magazine up using my knee and with Herculean effort, managed to press the mag release enough to get it out. The chambered round then came out easily.

I decided that for now, this is a 6+1 pistol. Seven rounds in the gun and seven in the spare magazines.
Easy to count and remember. This doesn't bother me in the least for a couple of reasons.

1) I own another semi auto that holds six in the mags and will jam every single time on the first round of a full magazine, after firing the chambered round. If I load the mags with 5 rounds, the gun is 100% reliable.
2) I often carry a revolver with a couple of speed strips. Same round count in the gun and the reloads. It works and is easy to remember if you count your rounds when shooting.

As far as ammo goes, I had 100 rounds of new manufactured, no name 124 FMJ, 100 rounds of Magtech 124 FMJ and 40 Gold Dot 124 JHP. (I'd hate to tell you what I had to pay for those, but I wanted to test them).

After firing over 100 rounds of ammo, I had ZERO malfunctions. The gun handled everything and was a pleasure to shoot. No issues, no slide bite nada.

My wife tried the gun and complained that it hurt her thumb but we quickly realized that she was holding it wrong so that there was a gap between the tang and the web of her hand that allowed it to slap her  under recoil. When we adjusted her grip, the issue went away.

I absolutely love this pistol. I still haven't found the reassembly to be a breeze as others have mentioned. But that is a minor gripe.

Finding an R51 Pistol / Re: Grabagun

I got mine from Classic Firearms. Shipping was slow because of the corona virus but it arrived.
I just checked their website and they still have them in stock at $229.00 with three magazines.
Apparently they have extended the sale.

I got one of the CT lasers from CDNN. Couldn't believe the price. Can't check the fit because I'm participating in a state imposed three day wait for my new R51!
It appears that accessories for these pistols are cheap.

Introductions section / R51 just arrived
April 16, 2020, 07:58:57 AM
Hello all. I'm heading to the gun shop in a few minutes to process the paperwork on my new R51.

I'm a long time pistol guy, retired police firearms instructor and armorer and current NRA instructor.

I have plenty of handguns, but something about this gun kept me interested every time I saw one.

I've watched dozens of you tube "experts" bash them but decided to try one for myself. I also figure I can learn more here than wasting any more time on you tube!

I'll let you know how it runs as soon as I can locate some ammo, which is as scarce as toilet paper around here right now.
