R51 General Discussion / Re: R51 disassembly nono!
November 11, 2017, 02:32:01 PM
I saw a computer generated video showing the full breakdown of the R51. Thought it would be a good way to deep-clean it. I was so tired of jamming, I thought it couldn't hurt.

The pins are in so tight, I feared damaging the frame, I got the pin with the hammer spring out, but didn't get the next one to budge.  Now I cannot reassemble the darn thing.  It was an unfortunate choice on my part to try this.

If you are addressing jams, it sounds like the mags are the place to focus.

I do not recommend disassembly beyond what the manual shows. If you do, best of luck.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Feeding Problems

It took two months to get the slide replaced. I don't know if I have the patience to deal with them again.  I may ask about replacement mags, but will not return the gun to them.  In the mean time, I started deburring the front edge. This could make a big difference, as the front edge was sharp enough to scrape off fingernail shavings.  Dremel and 600 grit wet & dry sandpaper made it feel better.  I'll head to the range next weekend and try them.

Down one mag as it got away from me and launched the baseplate lock to God knows where in my workshop.  :-\. Damn springs! At least it didn't hit me in the eye (safety glasses are great)

Got mine back from Remington, returned for a stuck slide and low POI. Got it back after too long.

Started with no problems, but now I am getting nosedives on the 2nd round in the magazine. Never had this prior to repair.  Happens w/115 g FMJ as well as my HP defense AMMO.

POI did not change.  >:( >:( >:(

I don't feel safe using this as a carry weapon anymore.

I LOVED this gun. I could get fast, accurate groups.  Cool design, low muzzle & easy recoil. Makes me sad that it may wind up sitting in the safe.

I'll try the magazine tweaks and polishing, hoping it will help, but I've bought a CZ75 compact to carry now.  Chubby and not as stylish, but it just works.

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue

Got the R51 back from Remington after only 2 months >:(

Slide was replaced. Functions fine. Still shoots low, but the "battle zero" may be the excuse.

Their repair tracking system was not functioning, so I had to email for status updates. They were really slow to respond. Calling them worked better, but it took a long time on hold to get through.

I still love the gun, but have lost respect for what is left of Remington.  Too bad.

General Discussion / Re: R51 Slide Issue

I worked at a gun range and had a few people with slides not locking back on last shots because their grip was pressing the thumbs against the side of the slide. That was enough to prevent locking back.

I've been able to rack with a full mag most times, but every now and then had trouble. Just went to locking the slide back before loading the mag and slingshotting. Never a problem doing it that way.

I have just loved the gun.  I get bit on the web of my hand when practicing my draw & shooting, like in a self-defense situation. I guess it's just the chubby hands. Maybe I need more cant on my holster.

Sadly, my slide jammed on me and I couldn't move the slide more than 1/8".  I fought it for a while and got it to budge, disassembled and recleaned it, only to have it do it again.  Kind of hard to load that way!!!  It's going back to Remington. They will also look at the low point of impact vs point of aim (8 inches low at 7 yards).  I couldn't justify returning it for that alone.  I miss it already!

This spring clamp really helps!

I push the slide lock out with a small home made tool consisting of a wine cork with the end of a chopstick glued into the end. Looks like a stubby ice pick w/a flat end. I just use it to start pushing the slide out while the spring clap holds the slide.

The rounded sights for the R51 is part of the cool aesthetics, in my view. Also low-snag.
How do these replacements look?
Can you attach a photo?

Thanks for sharing the info.

My new gun club, Stock & Barrel, just Southwest of Minneapolis carries them. 3 as of last night.  They have a website with a pro shop link you can order from as well.

They also have an upscale range & training facility. Check them out if you get a chance

Just joined up and looking forward to some discussions on the R51. I knew nothing about this gun until the release of the Gen2. One of our guys had an old 51 in .380 that he brought in to shoot, and the Remington rep came in with the new R51. Did a side-by-side shoot, and fell in love with the new R51. The art deco look is really cool, but the way it shoots for me is the best part. For the price, it was a done deal.

I bought it as a carry gun, and I can unload the mag quite quickly and keep it spot-on the target (fist-sized group). Very little muzzle-flip, recoil is hardly noticeable. I've had no failures to feed or eject, so it looks like I have a good one. The only odd thing is the point of impact is a bit low with my range ammo, to I look forward to reading up on others' experiences along those lines.
