I've come up with some tooling that makes it rather easy to remove the slide from the frame and getting them back together again. Also there is a "thumb pusher" that fits over the barrel lugs so you don't annihilate your thumb when pushing the barrel against the recoil spring. If there is any interest, let me know and I will come up with a price for a set. :)
This was my first cut at a tool; more complicated to use than the one below.
I'm interested, Gerry.
I have a second version that I hope to finish today, fewer parts and easier to use, so should be less costly. I'll post a picture when done, with some pricing. Thanks for your interest.
I like!
This is Concept 2 of the tool. It is much simpler and easier to use.
Latch the slide back. Slip the tool over the barrel and snug, not gorilla-tighten, the brass-nosed thumbscrew. It grabs on the barrel rings. Slowly release the slide; it will stop at the tool and is in position for the slide catch / take-down lever to be removed. Remove it and take the slide off the frame. You can then remove the tool if you want to remove the barrel from the slide. The "thumb pusher" comes in handy at this point.
You put the thumb pusher on the barrel lug and push the barrel slightly forward to release spring pressure and then loosen the thumbscrew and let the barrel come back slowly. You basically reverse the procedure to get the slide back on. That's about it. I'll come up with a price for both the disassembly tool and the thumb pusher as a kit. Thanks for looking.
I like it!
v3.0 should remove the thrumbscrew and feature internal 1/2-28 threads for anyone who's upgraded to a threaded barrel.. ;)
Cameron,
If you let me know the total or added length that the threaded barrel is compared to the standard barrel, I'll make one so you can give it a try.
Gerry
~0.725" :D
Here you go - where do you want it sent?
If I did the math correctly, you should latch the slide back, slide this tool over the barrel and thread it on until the end of the barrel is flush with the end of the tool. When you release the slide, it will stop at the tool and be in the right position to remove the slide catch / take-down lever. If it isn't perfectly aligned, you can screw the tool in or out to get it aligned and remove the lever and then the slide.
I'll send along a thumb-pusher so you can play with that, as well. :)
PM sent! More than happy to do a write-up for the forum :D
On the way.
I have finished 5 sets of the disassembly tooling. Each set consists of the barrel mounted R51 Field Stripping tool and the barrel Thumb Pusher. They are $38.50 per set, shipped to lower 48. I do accept credit cards. If interested in a set, PM me, and I will email you ordering details.
I've tried each set on my pistol, so if you have any problems, you will have to let me know, as I may need to change some tolerances / dimensions, but I do not expect anyone to have any problems. If, by chance, you do have a problem, you can return the tool(s), and I will make sure you get one that works for your pistol.
I also have a tool that fits on the threaded barrels, 1/2-28 RH or 13.5 x 1 mm LH, your choice with a Thumb Pusher, for the same price. The standard barrel tool is steel; the threaded barrel tool is aluminum, as shown above.
I sent you a PM. My pistol is still at Remington. They sent an email that they started evaluating it on Jan. 22. So, hopefully, I'll get 'er back WORKING soon!
3 sets left, 2 sold. (Buy all you want, I'll make more!) ;) I have a nice set of instructions, with pictures, that shows how to use the tools, that I send along in the package.
Been away for a week, but all I can say is that I am impressed! May have to spring for one next pay check!
Gerry, just tried out the T&E sample you sent me. All I can say is: NICE ;D
I wasn't expecting it to make a big difference, BUT IT DOES. I'll be doing a write up this week, and I'll post it here with pics.
Good. Job.
This tool works great! It makes a huge difference! Great job, GerryR!
I have made 5 more sets of tools for the standard barrel pistol, and they are available for purchase. PM me if you would like a set. Thanks.
This is far and away the best accessory for the R51 ever!
Quickest field strip and reassembly I've ever done.
Barry
The quality of Gerry's disassembly tool is amazing. His instructions are complete, and he has been very helpful with advise. Don't hesitate to buy his "invention". Remington should make it standard issue with the R51, especially for those of us with small, older hands.
The disassembly tools are a must have for all R-51 owners! This is particularly true if you opt to go with a threaded barrel.
Or, you might enjoy wasting time, pinched fingers, gnarled fingernails, bruised palms and fingers, and the sound of reverberating profanity in your pistol disassembly and cleaning area.
:)
Gerry sent me a set for T&E, and I wanted to share my review with the group.
Bottom-line up-front: I love this tool. It's well made, makes this pistol MUCH easier to dis/assemble, and saves your thumb from the feed ramp.
This is for the threaded-barrel version of the tool set that Gerry makes. It's a two-piece set, milled and turned out of 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum and polished tool-steel pins. The machining is quite well done, and every edge is deburred.

To use it, lock the pistol slide back with the slide lock, and thread the round piece onto the barrel until it's flush with the muzzle. I gave Gerry the added barrel length, and it's spot on.
Release the slide catch, and ease the slide forward until it's against the round spacer. You'll see the little humped key of the catch in the window of the slide. You can pop that out to remove the slide.

The square thumb pusher slips over the feed ramp, then fits nice and tightly onto the barrel. It will rotate down, and hold on pretty well.
SO MUCH EASIER to push the barrel forward, and keep control of it as you rotate it up to get the bushing to catch on the slide. Unthread the round spacer from the barrel, and drop out the breechblock.
The pusher helps to pull the barrel out from the slide. This is a little tricker for the longer threaded barrel, but having the pusher to wiggle with helped a lot. There's a video out there of one of the Remington company guys slipping it apart like a 1911, but I'm far from that level of mastery. This made a big difference, and produces less wear on the threads.

After cleaning or whatever, everything goes back in reverse order. I was able to slip my barrel back into the barrel bushing, which was still being held in the slide by the spring. Again, the pusher is VERY handy for getting the barrel back in. I know a lot of older guys can struggle with fine motor tasks; I can't help but thinking this is a must-have accessibility tool for anyone with lessened hand strength or dexterity.
All in all, this was a great idea, and I'm really happy Gerry is helping out the R51 community with his tools. I would highly recommend them, and just learned to like my R51 a little more ;D
Thanks for the write-up. One thing is a little confusing, "This is for the threaded-barrel Gerry makes......" Just to be clear, I do not make threaded barrels. I made this particular tool to fit the barrels you make, and am happy to supply a tool to those who buy your threaded barrels to ease the frustration of field stripping the R51. Again, thanks for the write-up; just wanted to be clear. ;)
Opp, sorry, was supposed to be "This is for the threaded-barrel version Gerry makes".
I'll fix that in the review...
Three sets available for immediate delivery. :)
GONRA hasa "Gen 2" and is interested yer tooling. Send me a "PM" or ???
PM sent.
I'd be interested in one of the threaded barrel sets.
Details at: http://www.totalautomation.us/guncorner.htm Use the "Contact Us" page, and call me with a CC number, and I will get a set in the mail to you. PM me if you have difficulty with my website. Thank you for your interest.
OK people, i just received the kit for the non threaded barrel in the mail. i put off dinner, grabbed my cleaning box and commenced with the tear-down. folks, this kit IS EXACTLY AS PROMISED. works like a charm. reassembly too. thumb pusher is the best part. no more pinched thumbs and cramps from holding the spring back. If you are contemplating one of these kits, don't wait.
I should have 4 more sets for the standard barrel available tomorrow; I have one set available for the threaded barrel.
I just found this thread - and I'll be "calling that man tomorrow!".
Although I think the teardown/re-assembly isn't as "bad" as a Ruger Mark III from a procedural standpoint, its waaaay worse from a logistical view. Although I'm not one to normally quote the man, in this case Adolf Hitler's quotation is apropos: "I'd rather have 3 teeth pulled than to go through that again!".

He probably suspects that Fegelein designed the pistol to make his life miserable! 😂😂

So THAT'S why Fegelein was shot! ;D
Order placed!
Used the tools for the 1st time so I could replace the trigger - they make working on this pistol SANE, its now as easy as my CZ-75! THANK YOU - *MUCH* better!!!!!
I know, I know....tooling can assist those with special needs but really, it doesn't have sound that difficult to disassemble and assemble an R51.
Some of us old timers have arthritic hands; try taking one apart under these conditions. Others just don't believe everything has to be done the hard way; tools make life a little easier!
I guess I have "special needs" then, because I don't have 3 hands and my prehensile tail is too short. I've never seen a pistol that is such a PITA to deal with, and I've seen a few, including the notorious Ruger Mark III which is nowhere near as bad.

It really doesn't give me any problems.
Peace favor your sword,
Kirk
I am definitely interested. I've shot the crap out of my R51 and it IS a joy to fire. The reassembly though has given me some problems. I'll say one thing, my R51 works very well when it's dirty.
You can PM me or contact me through my website, www.totalautomation.us.
Gerry
Gerry r is the tool still available?
Mike
Looks like he may have a new site...
https://dangerco.us/
EDIT ... the above site is for barrels and triggers
I am still making the tools, but am out of stock right now. I will have some available next week. I no longer have a website; the website that FlatEarther posted is the person that makes threaded barrels and triggers for the R51.
You can contact me through private message, and I will send you my email address. Pricing is $55.00 for the standard or threaded barrel tool and one thumb-pusher or $75.00 for both barrel tools and one thumb-pusher, plus $5.00 shipping to the lower 48 states.
I now have a few sets available, if interested.
Mr. GeryR,
I would be interested in this tool. Please let me know the info to purchase if you still have these available.
I thank you.
