R51 General Discussion / Magazines
December 17, 2017, 06:13:30 PM
It has slowly come to my attention that we have some great pistols that work great,
when Big Green deigns to give us working mags.   But, we are finally
getting our stuff together and making our mags work.  For those of you who
have working mags,  good on you,  the rest of us are slowly figuring out
what the problem is on the rest of the FUBAR mags.
Anyway,  Merry Christmas to you all, if that is what you do.  Gawd, I hate PC.

R51 General Discussion / Magazine quality control.
December 16, 2017, 05:06:54 PM
I have 7 R51 magazines.
Number #1   i had to clip the spring and take 3/16s off the follower.
same for mag #2..
#3 took 3/16 off the follower.
#4 and #5 had to straighten lip on the mag.
#6 straighten lip on mag and take 3/16 off the follower.
#7 straighten lip on mag.
It would seem like whoever is making the mags for Big Green would have
enough pride in their work to make them consistent.   Love the gun.
hate their mags.
And Big Green does not seem to give a rat's butt!

R51 General Discussion / Smokey
December 15, 2017, 05:17:28 PM
Got my new Smokey today.
Looks great!  Number 7 Magazine feeds fine, number 6 cannot load 7th cartridge
without loader.    Both lips had to be bent out.  Number 6 mag would nose dive every time
unloading by hand.    Will be on the range bright and early Monday am with
"Blackie" and "Smokey"
Noticed something else on Smokey,  You cannot eject unfired top cartridge from chamber
with 7 rounds in either mag.   Of course all of this may be immaterial when I fire the
gun.   Maybe something to the "Breakin" period on the gun?
Can't wait to get bone grips for Smokey.

R51 General Discussion / POINT AND SHOOT
December 10, 2017, 10:29:01 PM
Just a thought,
I have not seen any discussion on this forum about practicing "point and shoot"
with the R51.    I practice three ways, with the sights, with the CT and point and shoot.
I find that the R52 is very amenable to point and shoot   Up to about 12 yards.
As an aside,  I also find it more enjoyable to shoot tin cans at 50 feet than paper.
For some reason, I hit more beer cans than bulls on paper.    Maybe a product of
a misspent youth shooting at them with a .22?
Comments? :) :) :)

R51 General Discussion / R51 idiosyncrasies
December 09, 2017, 05:45:42 PM
I mentioned in an earlier post that I was not cleaning my R51 after any range sessions.
So far, it has had about 300 rounds through it dirty.   No problems.

on the R51 is 1 in 10 inches.

R51 General Discussion / Crimson Trace warranty
November 24, 2017, 12:44:41 PM
Found out today that Crimson Trace's warranty is as good as gold.
Not only that, I sent in the Laser for my R51 and got the new one
back in two weeks, including shipping.   I think they just boxed up a new CT
and mailed it back.   They are faster than the USPS!

R51 General Discussion / Keefer grips.
November 23, 2017, 04:00:07 PM
Is it just me or do Keefer grips make for a better feel in your hand.
I put a set of their grips on my R51 and my targeting improved.
They have different  woods, Mine are Teak.   They widen the grip,
and to me, make the gun more comfortable to hold and shoot.
I saw a set of Bone grips he made and they were really hot!
But his wife says he is not going to market them.
Has anybody else bought a set of their grips?
Comments?

R51 General Discussion / R51 disassembly nono!
November 10, 2017, 02:38:31 PM
I just received an email from Big Green.   In response to a request for a manual for disassembly of the R51. Their reply as follows.

" Sir, no we do not offer such a manual , only the owners manual . We do not recommend breaking the pistol down any further than what is  offered in the owners manual . Thank you ."

Any ideas?   Don't believe it has to do with any recession.   Remington

R51 General Discussion / GRIP SCREWS
November 07, 2017, 04:12:10 PM
Has anybody else noticed their grip screws getting loose after an extended shooting session?
My little O-rings got trashed taking the factory grips off and putting on the teak grips.
Wonder if Remington will sell us some spares?
Or maybe just some Loctite?

R51 General Discussion / The Bend!
October 30, 2017, 11:40:02 AM
For those interested, I found out what the bend is for in the top front of the mag.
it stops the follower from coming up further.
There is a hump on the front of the follower that hits that bend, and stops the
follower from coming up any further.

BTW,  The gun fed every time with the bend straightened,  I shot a 100 rds of (GASP!)
Winchester White box through it.   Worst torture I could think of.
Anyway, I bent it back like it was.  It will be a range mag for a while.  I've got
4 more.

R51 General Discussion / New and Improved (?) mags
October 23, 2017, 11:48:11 AM
Just received my new and improved mags from Big Green.   Visually, no difference
in the ones just received and the old ones.   only difference is the stock numbers.
Look and load the same.  Unloading, a different story.   Trying to unload the mags
the nose of the bullets catch on the little bent portion of the mag.
I am going to the range today and will give these
mags a workout with several  different brands of ammo.
Wish me luck.

General Discussion / New R51 mags in the mail?
October 22, 2017, 09:09:28 AM
I just got an email from UPS telling me I have a package coming from Remington.
Only thing I am expecting is two "new and improved" magazines.  Any body else
get one of these notifications?   I know several of us have been told by Remington
that we would get two new magazines.  Package will be here Monday, and I will
let you all know if it was  in fact the magazines.

R51 General Discussion / R51 Aficionados are smart.
September 16, 2017, 04:12:29 PM
Guys and gals,
Has anybody else noticed that the number of complaints are dropping
drastically on this blog?   I feel that it is because we as a team have helped
each other with tips and clues on how to whip this R51 demon.   It is fun,
sometimes depressing, often mind boggling, but in the end we have tamed
this Remington monster.   I personally love my R51,  The style, the feel
and the way it shoots.   If it quit shooting tomorrow, I would still love it.
It would join my other safe queen.   A Chiappa .22 1911.  No, on second thought,
nothing is that bad!

R51 General Discussion / Took my R51 for a walk.
September 11, 2017, 12:57:56 PM
Took my R51 for a walk today.    Tried something different.
I loaded 3 magazines with Alternating brands of ammo.
Pow'RBall, ARX, FMJ of various brands, some good some
on the verge.   No two brands next to each other in the mags.
Did this three times, for a total of 63 rounds, not counting the
one already chambered.
All three mags were ones I had put my mods on and mods
of other posters.   (I.E.)  3/16ths off the follower legs, and a section
of spring.
Never a hiccup.  Oh, BTW, I shot the gun dirty from the last
time I shot it. Just for grins.

R51 General Discussion / Comfortable shooting
August 10, 2017, 10:28:53 AM
I have read several posts about "Slide Rash" etc.   I am 82.  I cured this problem with a
pair of leather riding gloves.   These are thin leather gloves that I use for shooting and driving.
Worked for me.
