R51Fan,
I forgot to mention, my R51 will lock up with the hammer down.   And it was made in the "Queen City".
Blackie

So it does work for you??? That's great!! Hope that helps you!

Good idea. Frankly though, if you get yours 100% reliable, it might make a good MAIN carry gun. Or you could carry two (on for the main gun, and one back up) and four mags, and you would be set. That way you would have interchangability with mags and ammo.  Or who knows, you may want to purchase another and leave it still in the cosmoline wrap in the box, and stuff it in the safe. They could become collector guns in the future!

R51Fan,
I wonder if Remington knows this?  It is certainly not in the manual.
I will try it with mine tonight.
Blackie

If Remington knew about it I wonder why they didn't tell anyone. I have a Huntsville gun, not a Charlottesville (or a re-worked) gun. Does anyone else out there have a Huntsville frame pistol that does the same thing? Just trying to determine if this is has any relation to new production Gen 2 guns, not re-worked Gen 1 guns or if mine is just doing crazy things. More posts from other memebers would be greatly appreciated!n :)

Ok, the moment I have been waiting for for weeks! I was very happy to see when I opened the box that the frame was stamped Huntsville, AL not Charlottesville, NC. I contacted Remington the other day, and they tell me it was made in July this year. So yesterday, I put the new 51 to the test! Not an all inclusive test, mind you, ( I wanted a greater variety of ammo than what I had on hand, but was to lazy to make the drive back into town to get more) but a reasonable test nonetheless. I went ahead and modified the mags first, so as to check one item off the list of possible problems. So with no further ado, let's get to it! The ammo I used were (1) Federal 115 FMJ aluminum case ammo 100 rounds (2) Federal Hydra-Shock 147 Hollow points 50 rounds and finally (3) Hornady Critical Defense 115 FTX hollow points 25 rounds. All shooting took place at 10 yards. I elected to start by loading a full mag of the 115 grn. Federal aluminum ammo on a closed slide and attempted to jack in the round off the top by racking the slide. I got half way back and it froze up. Darn! Punch the mag out, and lock the slide back. Inserted the full mag again and closed the slide. No problems. First mag.......7 rounds no failure to fire, extract, or double feeds, or nosedives. Ok, runs good. Shot the entire first 50 rounds uneventfully. Ok, on to the Hydra-Shock hollow points. First mag, no snag ups. Second mag.....just as good as the first. Last two mags, rapid fire. I was impressed so far. Back to the Federal aluminum stuff. Shot all 50 rounds, no problema. Saving the best for last, I shot the Hornady Critical Defense 115 grn. FTX hollow points. Slow shooting the first couple, then rapid the last two. Again, functioned flawlessly. I ran clean out of ammo, and NOT ONE FAILURE OF ANY KIND!!!!!! Furthermore, I loved the overall lighter recoil and natural feel it had in my hands. And again, it was flawless on function. I would have no qualms about entrusting my life or safety to it for a carry gun, or making it a good target gun as well. Now time for the negatives. The trigger left somewhat to be desired in my opinion. Then again, I'm used to the nice clean, crisp trigger of my 1911's so maybe I'm just spoiled. And a plastic trigger??? On an all metal gun?? Really??? And like a plastic trigger isn't light enough, so we need to skeletonize it to make it even more lighter?? Maybe they did it for cosmetic reasons. Take down is not as bad as I had expected. After watching multiple youtube videos, I was expecting my field strip experience to be about as graceful as a grossly overweight goose trying to run for dear life on a froze over pond. Surprisingly, my only tough time was trying to get the barrel properly aligned to go back in the front of the slide. Otherwise, no further complications on my part, but I still have to admit, field stripping could be easier. Overall though, I am one VERY PLEASED R51 owner!!! :)

This is what the slide looks like when it latches itself in the take down position

My humblest apologies. The hammer must NOT BE COCKED before attempting this! If it is cocked, it certainly will not work.

R51Fan,
Nice try, but my pistol does not do that.  Gawd, I wish it did.  Appreciate the attempt.
Blacike

Dang! Sorry about that! Will post a picture of how it locks itself back today, for all to see. Just so folks don't think I'm making something up. Wish it would have worked for you.

R51 General Discussion / Take Down Made Simple?
November 23, 2017, 09:55:07 PM
Just found something on my R51 that may make yall's experience of field stripping your R51 easier. I found that on my pistol, if you grasp the front of the slide and GENTLY and SLOWLY move it to the rear, the slide locks itself exactly in the position for it to be taken down. Again, move the slide to the rear slowly so you can feel it. Right when the take down notch in the slide comes directly over the front of the slide lock lever, it should latch open (not securely, but it will stop), (or at least it does on mine). I have found this makes it a lot easier, as I only have to grasp the barrel and push the lever out with my other hand instead of struggling to hold the slide with one hand. Not sure if this is something peculiar to my pistol, or if other's pistols will do the same thing. I hope I found a solution to make life easy. If not let me know. Hope this helps!

Well, they finally got here, no thanks to the "Speed of Cabelas"!
11 days to move them 30 or so miles!  UGH!

No real hang ups, just a slight hesitation on the first cartridge from the loaded mags when I tried to "slingshot" them into the chamber.  The first mag, just hesitated, the second took another "grab, pull and let loose" again and went home.
Just a tiny hang up on that "bent" lip on the two magazines that were used that way.

Glad that yours finally came in!! I was beginning to wonder if it had gotten lost on it's way to you! Also, glad to hear it works decent. I got mine on Tuesday, and today I will give it a workout, and report back in with a separate thread. One thing I will mention so far as the mags are concerned. I had one, that had the bent lip that wasn't bent in as far as the other. One was grossly bent in too far. The other was not bent in very far by comparison. So I hand fed rounds into them and the mag with the lesser bend, fed fine. The other nosedived on the sixth round. So I went ahead and bent it back and it seems fine now. Next step is to go out and actually put it in the gun, and shoot it to find out if it will work. I wonder if someone is trying to sabotage Remington?????

Thank you Chokejug. And all of you! So this afternoon I go to pick them up. Will see what happens. I will start a new thread once I unpack them, and give a range report as well. Probably won't happen until Sunday, and will post again with the full report on Monday most likely.

R51Fan,
My pistol also has a North Carolina stamp.   Send your serial numbers to Remington support and they can tell you where the gun was manufactured.
Mine was a GenII.

Thanks 1911SHOOTER.  :)

General Discussion / Big Day Tomorrow
November 20, 2017, 08:04:11 AM
Hello All,

Big day is tomorrow! I go to get my new R51s! Just a concern I have that I want to pass along. When the salesman goes to fetch the guns from around back, should I request only those guns with Huntsville, AL stamps on the frame (since I am assured they are Gen 2), and to not grab anything stamped Charlottesville, NC on them (since those are Gen 1). Or can I be safely assured that any gun that is currently for sale has received the proper modifications, and just quit be nit picky? Thanks in advance for the help!

Sean,
Welcome aboard from Texas neighbor.   Glad to have you here.

Thank you! All of my family on both sides were originally from North East Texas, specifically Paris and Clarksville. Came to Shreveport in the oil boom days. So I consider myself at least part Texan anyway!

Hello gents!

My name is Sean from Shreveport, Louisiana! Just got familiar with the new R51 a few weeks ago. I have been shopping for a carry gun, and came across it on Remington's website. Am going to pick up two next week over the Black Friday sales. I am excited about this new to me gun, and can't wait to get mine! Also, I look forward to meeting all of you, and interacting with you all on the forum. I have already learned quite a bit and look forward to learning much more! Thanks!

My best,
Sean
