Well I decided it was time to start reloading so I jumped in with both feet. Picked up a Hornady LNL AP press and all the bits and pieces to reload 45, 380 and 9mm. So far I've only reloaded 36 rounds of 45ACP just to get the feel for the press and to test different powder loads to see which my pistols prefer. All went bang and functioned perfectly. Next I think I'll load some 9mm and see if the R51 will function as well as it does with factory ammo. Out of all my 9s the R51 has the tightest chamber so if I have success with that one I'll be doing something right.

Made a front sight for the Smoked R51 today.

Anyone else like to shoot clays? I can count on both hands the number of times I've shot a 12 gauge shotgun, but last week I got the bug when I was in Walmart. Just decided to get an 870, some clays, ammo and a target thrower. I was worried after I got home and read the reviews on the newer 870s having extraction and ejection problems but as it turned out, this least expensive model is a good one. Burned up 6 boxes of shells and twice as many clay pigeons and had a blast. Had so much fun my shoulder will need a week to recover. I can't believe I waited so long to try trap shooting.

Picked up my R1 stainless today. All I can say is Huntsville has their stuff together on the 1911 line. This one has a lighter, more crisp trigger than my 9mm enhanced does and I haven't even done a fluff & buff yet. I had to change out the walnut grips for some USAF carbon fiber grips as soon as I got it home. I might have to start carrying this one as soon as it proves itself at the range.

Couldn't find any bad reviews on it in either 9mm or 45 ACP so, when I saw grab-a-gun had the 9mm for $555, I figured why not and just ordered one. First time ordering from GaG so we'll see how that goes. Any of you guys have experience with the R1s? I checked one out the other day at the LGS and the only things I didn't like were the thicker than normal grips and the trigger was a bit sloppy but those are easily changed. I really liked the trigger action, super smooth and it felt like it was just around 4 pounds.

An inexpensive 1911 chambered in 22, it's about as much fun as you can have with your pants on. It'll eat anything except standard velocity ammo but I suppose once it's worn in it'll eat that also.

Here's a thread where we can all keep track of the number of rounds fired through our R51s. I usually stop counting after a firearm's newness wears off and don't keep a log so this would be useful. This forum makes it easy because we're never locked out from modifying our post and changing the number after each range trip.

Let's try to keep this to just 1 post per member so the thread doesn't get too full of extraneous replies. 11/27/2017- Purchased my R51

Just about all the primers from the cases fired through my R51 have the bulge with the crater flow around the firing pin. Reading dozens of threads on several different forums points to all kinds of causes, from headspace, firing pin hole too large, over-pressure, firing pin design and so-on. One writeup suggested the Pedersen design contributes to this by nature of a non-locking breech block that's free to move as the firing pin strikes the primer. Seems plausible.

So are there enough of us having primer anomalies to consider them normal with the R51, or are there some that never have the issue?

Last time I was out with the R51 I wanted to practice some rapid fire, two shot, three shot and sometimes all 7+1 on multiple targets (1-4 seconds). On more than one occasion my my thumb inadvertently contacted the slide lock, causing the slide to either lock open with rounds still in the mag, or fail to lock open on the last round. If I just casually fire at the targets I don't have a problem. Any of you right handed shooters ever have either happen?

Stopped in to the LGS this morning to check out some high capacity 9s. I could have gone home with several but decided on the Ruger since I didn't have a Ruger pistol in my inventory. She's all cleaned and lubed, ready to hit the range along  with the R51 next week.

You know what I'm talking about. Do you guys hate it as much as I do? Today when I was disassembling my R51 I discovered what's causing it. It's the small safety return spring getting caught between the edge of the hole and the thru pin when the safety is depressed. The backstrap creates enough leverage to easily overcome the binding but this is definitely a design flaw. Time to start re-engineering, again.

One of these shapes is going to be the winner if I end up having to make my own trigger. The angles at which they sit in the guard may have to be tweaked slightly and an over-travel screw added so keep that in mind. Also, I think I'll add some shallow serrations to match the ones on the frame and slide. Suggestions, improvements, feedback? feel free to comment.

First range trip today, the good and bad.

First the good

-Fired 264 rounds of various ammo (see pic) with only one FTFeed. The one FTF, Blazer Brass 115gr, was the last round from the magazine. It stovepiped but did feed and fire when fed from the mag again. All others fed, fired and ejected without issue.

-Very accurate and easy to keep on target with low recoil. The 6" target in the pic below was from the first 84 rounds (2 mags of each brand) fired at 10 yards. The first mag or two I fired slowly to get my POA vs POI but the rest I let rip when I could (see the bad). Only one round off the target, the one you can see in the middle of the trigger guard.

Now the bad

-The trigger would intermittently fail to reset. Sometimes it would reset after all 7 fired rounds but this was maybe one in five mags. Most always would fail to reset once and as many as 3 times per magazine.

-Initially one mag would only accept 6 rounds. No matter what I tried, #7 would just not go. I found that mag spring was slightly tweaked causing it to stack and bind under one side of the follower. I managed to fix it and the mag worked fine but I will call Remington and see if they will send me a new spring.

Just picked up my R51 yesterday, thought I better take advantage of the rebate's last day or I might regret it. I jumped on a RM380 deal at the beginning of the rebate and its been flawless. I love that little pistol and hope the R51 is just as reliable. Already not liking the 51's loose plastic trigger too much but the pull makes it acceptable, pretty decent at 5-1/2 pounds. Going to completely clean and lube it tomorrow for a range trip this week.
