Dont know if the lack of support for +p+ loads is lack of strength or Remington not wanting the liability or warranty claims.

A stiffer barrel spring could help bring the limit up a bit.  Or at least thats what is recommended for my makarov when shooting 115grn bufalo bore.  Grandma might not be able to rack the slide, but whatever.

Seems like the r51 breech block is much more solid than the model 51s.  I was looking at getting one, then found out that modern 380 tends to break it.

How much will this version take?  Hard to say.  The current r51 does pretty well with hotter loads though.

So, i could potentially change my barrel, breech block, main spring, and magazine and convert my 9mm gun to 357 sig then?

I pull the slide off with the gun upside down.  I pull the slide back further to grab the serrations and to seat the block into the slide so that when I pull it off, the block doesn't obstruct.

Same thing when the slide goes back on.  Block has to stay clear of the rails and the barrel centered.  You also have to hold the extractor up.

With practice, I have disassembly down to the time it takes me to strip a 1911.  Slower than my cz75, but not bad.

Get Remington to send you some new mags.  I bought a second r51 with one crappy mag.  Put it in my last gun, which has been pretty flawless, and suddenly it's nosediving, doublefeeding, etc......

I think the guns themselves are fine.  The mags are most of the problem.

However, one must realize that ammo can and is a big factor.  The gun cant be any better than what one feeds it.  Unlike some other folks on other guns, I dont believe that every gun should run every brand/type ammo out there!

I find way too much divation in any ONE BRAND of ammo, that one could reasonably expect ANY gun to run them ALL perfectly!

I have a Beretta 92FS, , a CZ75, a CZ83 and a Sig Blackwater.  All have worked flawlessly on whatever ammo (including Russian steel) I've used without the first glitch - not one! - in a lot of years.  It is a real disappointment that a company like Remington has put out such a glitchy pistol as the R51.  A major manufacturer's product should not require the amount of kludging this pistol requires.

Even though I've modified the mags and run several hundred rounds through it, the R51 is still not reliable enough for me to use for CC.

Just my personal experience.  Happy Christmas!

I see you're in Atlanta.  Want to trade a walther Ccp for that r51?

R51 General Discussion / R51 barrels on ebay cheap

Noticed these a while ago on ebay:

I'm guessing these are leftovers from the gen1's.  Kind of an indication that the gen1's weren't turned into scrap, though I'm guessing a barrel with an unknown round count couldn't be legitimately sold in a new gun.

I wouldn't be surprised if triggers, mag catches, pins, magazine parts, etc.... from the gen1's made it into the gen2's.  I wouldn't think the slide or pederson block would make it as these items were the problem.  Probably not the frame either as the pederson block tended to dig two trenches across the top of the frame, though maybe this could be fixed somehow.

R51 General Discussion / Re: Magazines

I'm starting to suspect that Remington has been recycling a lot of their gen1 recalled parts into their gen2 guns and mags.  I'm ok with this, but that is likely the source of some of these smaller issues since the re-release.

I'm thinking that most of these guns are basically OK.  Like I mentioned, I ran that one bad mag through my previously perfect gun, and it suddenly had all of the malfunctions that this gun has been known for.

It's crappy that such a high percentage of mags are problematic, but at least that is a manageable problem.  It's a small inconvenience for a gun that was cheap in the first place, is as accurate as a full sized 9mm, and still has less muzzle flip than almost all other guns on the market....and is all metal.

On the subject of the mags, one of the ones that came with the second gun had all of the nose diving, double feeding issues.  Tried that mag in the first gun, which has been nearly flawless, and all of those same issues started occurring on that gun as well.  I'll scrutinize this mag to see what the deal is.  Maybe I'll ask Remington for another.

Aside from that, I ran 50 rounds of steel cased monarch ammo through the two guns with no issues.

Also took my rm380 to the range.  My dad was impressed by the accuracy of that little thing.

I'm drinking the Remington coolaid.  There might be some twitchy minor things to get around, but I feel these guns outperform most of the other guns on the market for a lower price.....and they are metal.

R51 General Discussion / Ordered up another r51

Got my second r51 on black Friday.  Guess this will be the third I've had to date.   I had one of the first gens.  Liked that one too.  Tweaked a few things to let it sortof work.  Ultimately sent it back though.

I see the unfavorable reviews and can't see how they come to their conclusions.  The gun is accurate, has much less muzzle flip, and is easy to shoot fast.  Very fun gun to shoot.

Hopefully they keep production going.  If they run the rebate again I'll probably get a third.
