In addition to my addiction to the R51, I also have another addiction as well......M1 Garands. As an avid collector of the M1 rifle, I am always intrigued by the lowest and highest serial numbers of each make made, and those in between. So now it is starting to carry over to the R51. I have a Huntsville stamped frame made in July of this year serial number 20614. My question is, what is an approximate serial number when frames started getting stamped Huntsville, and when Charlotte frames end? I know this may seem a bit crazy, but I just can't help but be curious since I think I have been inflicted with the terminal illness R51itis.
First one, 361xx
Second one, 346xx
Third one, Well, we don't know yet, do we????
The second one must have lain on a shelf a bit, yeah?
Both Charlotte of course.

Interesting, mine has a 20,000 serial number and was stamped Huntsville. Yours are later and they are stamped Charlotte. Maybe they found some extra stock of existing frames to finish? Or, keeping in mind that technically Charlotte frames are actually Gen 1 guns, they were part of original production, and they started over with serial number 1 at the beginning of Gen 2 production at Huntsville? I would think however, that they would simply have picked up where Gen 1 production left serial number wise. This is interesting indeed.
Mine is 109XX from Charlotte.
Another interesting question. Are the Smokeys on a different serial number run?
Mine is H023XXX, Assuming the H is for Huntsville.
Do any of the black R51s from Huntsville have an H in front of the serial number?

Yes Blackie. Mine is Huntsville and it has a H prefix to the serial. That would be interesting to find out about the Smokeys and if they are on the same run or not?
UPDATE: However, I think we have a trend going.....so far two Smokies with 23xxx serial numbers.
On mine the number is 0025086R51 and the frame is stamped Charlotte NC.

Highest serial number Charlotte so far. Like I said previously, mine is a AL gun and its serial is 20614. Also, answers a previous question that Blackie had, and that yours is missing the H prefix to the serial number, meaning that it must be specific to Huntsville. I wonder if Remington started over in a previous serial number block with the new production frames, and are working back up. If so, this could make for something interesting to look for.........duplicate serial numbers. Wouldn't it be cool to have a Charlotte and a Huntsville with the same serial number. 8)
Purchased mine Jun 2017 and is Charlotte 00285xxR51... Joe
Charlotte 0015xxxR51
My Huntsville....H003xxxR51
My Charlotte ... 0010xxxR51
Rocky has just confirmed my suspicions. It looks like Remington started production fresh in Huntsville with a new serial number block.....probably starting at or below 3,000. Rocky, you have 3,xxx and to date is the LOWEST serial number on any R51 I have found. Gen 1 production in Charlotte reaching (thereabout) the highest serial number I have seen to date (36,1xx). With such a low serial number, this must mean Remington started completely fresh in Alabama. Also, something else to keep our eyes open for, there seems to be a trend with Smoke frames in the 23,xxx range. So far, I have seen two on this forum that have 23,xxx serial's, and one on display in a local shop with a 23,xxx serial number. Will the trend continue, or will it break at some point? Time will tell. Thanks for posting guys!

Huntsville frame I saw on the shelf the other day was a 15000 number.
My Serial number is H009677R51 mfg. March 2017.
My R51 is marked Charlotte and its number is 0032067R51. I've had it since November of 2016. It came with the laser module on it if that makes a difference.
Two things I am trying to look for. Lowest serial Huntsville frame (when new production started again), and highest Charlotte frame (when Gen 1 production ceased). Are Smoke frames a special or limited run? So far the only ones cropping up are those in the early 20,000 range giving support to them being a limited run. Also, about what time frame did they run out of old Charlotte frames to build pistols on, and when officially did the new Huntsville frames start coming to light. Some things have become apparent though. Obviously, Remington must have started over with the serial numbers, because so far, we have a Huntsville as low as 3000. Where exactly did the Big Green stop? We may never know. Remington released the R51 at the SHOT show in February 2014, and by July issued it's recall notice. That time frame includes roughly (and I mean roughly) 133 days (give or take a few, this is just an estimate) with a high number of approximately 36000 pistols. So that equates out to a production schedule of about 271 pistols a day and only 4.5 months of production. Sorry to ramble on, but this is just very interesting to me. Keep posting! The more we get, the more this picture will become clear! Thanks again!
My Charlotte gun is 27xxx, the black Huntsville gun is 20xxx, and the Smoke I have is 23xxx. Both Huntsville guns have serial numbers that begin with "H". Interestingly, while the font size at the top of the frame is the same on all pistols (the same line with either "Charlotte" or "Huntsville"), the serial numbers are not. On the Charlotte gun the serial number is slightly smaller in size relative to the line above it, while on the Huntsville guns the serial number has a larger font size than the line above it - and is much easier to read. If I am not mistaken, I have seen other Charlotte pistols with later serial numbers that have the same larger font as the Huntsville guns.

Interesting observation Indyman. On M1 Garands, the ealy rifles (1937-1943) had large font serial numbers, and once they switched into the 1,000,000 serial number block (approx. 1.5 to 1.6 million range in 43) they switched to a smaller font which continued until the end of production. Not sure exactly why Remington made the switch as they are still a ways of from hitting the seven digit mark in production! A long way from where they are now! You are also now confirming my theory about the Smokeys. Yours is another 23,000 number pistol. So far, only Smokey's cropping up are those in the 23 range. Did they designate the 23,000 block specifically for the Smokes?
Just broke my own theory. There is a Smokey on Gunbroker right now. It is a Huntsville pistol, however the serial is 24,013. So they ventured outside 23,000

Thanks Johnny. The best way to find out exactly when yours was made is too email Remington and ask them what the date of manufacture is for your R51. I think their email is info@Remington.com
That way you can know for sure. I purchased mine in November, and the manufacture date was July 2017. So it was on the shelf 4 months at least. Hope that helps. I am guessing by the serial number you have a Charlotte frame pistol?

Yes, Huntsville. I bought the second to keep NIB,but I'm thinking maybe I should preserve the 920. What do you think?

I think preserving the 920 is what I would do. Collector's usually go nuts over earlier serial numbers rather than later ones. But they are both your pistols, so it's your choice. ;)
I think I will retire the 920 ser #. I got my answer back from Remington on dates of manufacture, Quote:"Good morning, both of these firearms were made in 2017. Thanks." That was less than informative!

Funny. When I emailed them about mine, which is 20 thousand something (bad memory), they said it was made July 2017. I wonder why they didn't give you months?
I don't know, but I couldn't leave it alone. They got my reply, respectful and sarcastic.
The AR article, that convinced me to buy the pistol, featured ser # H015300R51 on the cover in October 2017
I always wondered why people were reluctant to publish the serial number of an old gun such as we see written up in gun magazine articles. I guess they are afraid someone would recognize the SN or try to claim it was property of others; you know, a guy could say, hey, that was my daddy's pistol, I want it back! Caution is always a good policy. I get a chuckle out of the "Smokey" nickname the gray models have now. Part of the fun all of the Forum people are having with this brand-new product, poring over every feature of it. It's interesting that some of the guys are buying two or more R51's. I'm glad I got mine and was not put off by the initial 1st Gen. recall.

More for security than anything else. From what I have heard, it is to easy for someone to see the number, report it as stolen and then......viola! You now have a stolen gun on your hands! Then all of the associated paperwork and legal work associated with trying to prove that it is rightfully yours can be a nightmare. I don't have a problem posting my full serial, but maybe I am a little bit foolish in doing so.
I would not publish the serial number of a gun that I didn't buy new and have the receipt for.
I've got a Huntsville HO165xxR51
adding to the pool (and creating a zombie thread ;D) - 000796XR51 and it's a Charlotte North Carolina frame.
Sirrus Rider. Thanks for the post and welcome to the forum! Forget about Zombie threads, this is the place to post it! Better to keep all the pertinent info in one spot.
I live in the Huntsville area so I had to have them go in the back and grab a Huntsville vs a NC. They have pumped out more R51's quicker than I thought. My serial # is H0043##R51. It's supposed to be a Christmas gift from the wife so it has to sit under the tree until Christmas Day. Can't wait!
I dunno-it ain't here yet! Just ordered me a smoke frame seein' as my RM 380 has been such a champ. It's supposed to be here next Wed. so-here's hopin' it's a good 'un! Also got 4 extra mags and some Buffalo Bore ammo on the way, too! Can hardly wait!
Well, yall got lucky for Christmas! I've already spent my gun allowance for the year, so will have to be more judicious with my spending next year, and I might get another one. Thanks to both of you for posting. Let us know what you get Snuffy! I'm right there with you in the waiting department! Also, please post a range report!
Received mine last week, serial # H0059xxR51.
I understand that a Charlotte marked frame doesn't mean that it is Gen 1 because the first Gen 2 guns were assembled with those left over frame in Huntsville. My question is, "Does the H prefix on on the s/n mean it is a Gen 2 assembled in Huntsville?"

From my research, yes, the H prefix does mean Huntsville.
Just bought a new R51 serial # H0171xxR51. Remington said it was made in 2017. Distributor must have had it for awhile. Looking forward to the range.

Gray model H0254XXR51 bought 1/11/19
I recently purchased a USED R51 that has a 20,0xx serial number and is marked Charlotte. Presumably it is a 2016 gun, and
likely 2nd generation. This is all quite confusing, and I don't understand why Remington doesn't post accurate info on this topic?.

Assuming the serial number of your "new" used gun begin with H02, is your gun is a Smokey model?
I have two guns, the black serial begins with H01, and the Smoke/Silver with H02

Just picked up a a CT edition. Purchased from lockedloaded.com on 4/5 arrived in Houston, Texas on 4/17. It's a Huntsville gun S/N: H01034#R51

Know what, guys, since Remington has discontinued these neat little pistols, I gotta think this Forum will kind of fade away after a while, but it's been fun, and
I like my R51 a lot. Hope to keep checking in and see what others' may post in the future. We've all learned a lot about our handguns, and that's what keeps this hobby interesting! Special thanks to the guys who provided 'after-market parts', which I've taken advantage of.

Interestingly enough, most all of the Smokies are Huntsville frames and have serials starting in the 25xxx block. I wonder if any Charlotte Smokies will surface, or if they are all Huntsville frames.
I have compiled a spreadsheet of all the known serial numbers and it does seem that all the two-tone Smoke models are Huntsville marked with a range of H022XXXR51 - H027XXXR51. Oddly I haven't seen any starting with H026XXXR51, but then it skips to the H027XXXR51 range. I sent an email to Remington requesting some more information but haven't heard back yet. Probably never going to happen.
These are the serial number ranges that I have surmised so far. It is an educated guess deduced from the data I have collected so far and will be updated as new information comes out. If you have information that is contrary to this, please let me know so I can update.
- 0000501R51 - 0001299R51 = Remington R51 initial release for shows and T&E - around November 2013. These handguns appear to have a different or thinner finish on the slide. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_2nTQLOBiE
- 0001300R51 - 0007699R51 = Gen 1 consumer release before recall of July 25, 2014. Some of these frames are reused for Gen 2 rebuilds so this sequence number is not definite. There is some overlap between Gen 1 and Gen 2. The latest Gen 1 I have found is 0009191R51 and the earliest Gen 2 is 0007781R51.
- 0007700R51 - 0036999R51 = Gen 2 release still marked "Charlotte" starting June 23, 2016 to original Gen 1 owners. These handguns and all subsequent have the black FNC finished slide. Retail roll-out resumes August 12, 2016.
- H000001R51 - H021999R51 = Gen 2 marked "Huntsville" starting January 2017
- H022000R51 - H027999R51 = Gen 2 in the "Smoke" two-tone color scheme starting September 2017
