I would worry that the smoothness would make it more difficult to hold and control during recoil.

Actually the gun is easier to hold with the smooth Keefers grips on it as it fills the hand better.

The laminate walnut grips and g10 grips offered by remington both have the palm swells....and texture that is not too agressive.
