Some thoughts and questions

I'm a newbie on this forum. Just did an introduction in the other forum. Here are some thoughts and a question or two:

When Remington came out with the R51 i jumped. And, as we all know, it was a disaster. Almost two long years later out came the "revised" R51. Got it. Let me say the one thing that I learned on YouTube about the R51. For me (and this guy...) 115 grain would not clear the chamber. I switched to 124 with IMMEDIATE results. I suspect if I run down the topics here that has already been addressed. Took it to the range twice now. Dead on accurate. I love the ergonomics. I love the thinness, and yet, even with 124 grain, it's more steady (and less painful - old guy with arthritis!) than any of the other single stack subcompacts.

I am using the R51 as a secondary carry and, frankly, it's conceal carry frame makes an almost invisible print under my shirt. Also, open to suggestions on a holster - IWB & OWB.

My sincere hope is that the bad PR from the first round does not crush the second round. Also, I think Remington should have a note about 124 grain over 115. HOWEVER, I am all ears if you have a brand of 115 that works for you. Now I'm going to get stupid and get an extra two mags and probably some night sights. Open to any suggestions.

I use 115 gr Remington no problems , and Magtech 115, Blaser Brass 115, as for a holster I use a Big Daddy works for me $15. I try to post pic of holster ,but could not I going to ask Robert how to put it on

Welcome Aznav,
Just today I passed the 900 round mark with my R51 and it eats 115 grain as well as 124 without any feed problems. If I had to guess, I'd say that about 600 rounds were 115 grain from Remington, Blazer, Federal, Perfecta, PMC Bronze and a few others who's name slips my mind. The only issues I've had to date have been with one magazine causing a last round stovepipe on occasion and a trigger bar/disconnector out of adjustment. As for a holster, well mine stays in the box when I'm not at the range. I just don't trust it enough to replace either of my Shields for carry duty.

Aznav,

I use Federal aluminum case 115 gr. in mine and functions flawlessly. Mine literally eats everything I feed her, even steel case  :o But wait, according to youtube, the R51 can't handle steel right?  ::). She isn't picky. "Hilda" is my primary carry pistol from day to day. I used to carry a full size Gov. 1911, but have since gotten spoiled to carrying less weight around. Also, I use an Uncle Mike's holster (for 12.99) and it does the job. About the mags, just tell the Big Green you got two FUBAR mags, and they should send replacements. Hey, I've mooched off em and gotten at least two freebies.

Aznav,
My two R51s both eat 115 as well as 124.  I use ARX as my carry ammo in all my
guns, as does my wife.  Never a snag with this ammo.

I believe that my Huntsville has more rounds than any other pistol on this forum...somewhere around 1800 rounds.   After getting my Mags #1 2 repaired/modified my failure rate is 0.6% on 115 gr reloads!!!   And 2/3 of those were 1st round FTF's ...Sooo

The pistol works.

I have fired: (new magazines)   FTF=failure to feed

Hornady Critical Defense 115 gr - 75 rounds - no jams = accurate

Hornady Critical Duty 135 gr - 50 rounds - 1 jam - FTF - accurate

Hornady American Gunner 115 gr - 150 rounds - 2 jams - FTF - accurate

Liberty Civil Defense 50 gr +P (yes, 50) - 20 rounds no jam - accurate

Sig Sauer V-Crown 147 gr - 20 rounds - 3 jams - front lip catches mag

Remington Ultimate Defense 124 gr - 60 rounds - no jams - shoots low but groups well

Winchester white box 115 gr FMJ - 150 rounds - no jams - inaccurate

PMC 115 gr FMJ - 100 rounds - several FTFs and nose catches - sux all the way around

Blazer Brass 115 gr FMJ - 200 rounds - 1 jam (dirty gun?) - accurate

Most of my jams were from new mags and breaking the gun in except for the Sig Sauer and the PMC ammo. Those were definitely ammo related.

Over 800 rounds fired so far.

Johnny,

I may have gotten lost back there, but have you modified your mags yet? If you haven't I wouldn't expect any malfunctions to clear up. Anyway, please post range report when you get back. I hope everything works well for you!

Sounds like Johnny has ammo problems.  If he had a mag problem,
it would show up with any ammo.

In this case, Blackie may be right. It may be ammo incompatibility. Make sure that it likes whatever defensive ammo you plan on using. Also, if you need pics posted, PM me and get my email and I can post them for you. No need to bother Robert with it.

I believe the top barrel is the Ebay one that he threaded and the bottom is the factory barrel from his pistol. For the record, there's another barrel on Ebay that looks different from both of these but is a drop-in replacement also. I tested one in mine but I opted to hone and polish the chamber because it was as tight as the original. It also has a raised edge on each side at the top of the feed ramp (not on gen2 barrel) which I had to contour and polish because they were causing feeding problems. It's in my R51 right now and functions fine. Here's the link (Barrel)
