shooting low

I have done a search. I found a thread about the R51 shooting low on Google and clicked on in it brought me to the board and then I had to sign in. Now I can't find the thread. So, with apologies, I will ask the question.

I have close to 300 rounds through my R51 I bought about a month ago. It is shooting low. I have read that Dawson Presicion has the proper height front sight. Went to their web site and they have no listing for anything for the R51.

What is the trick on getting a set of sights from them?

At 50 feet, mine is right on with a "combat hold" - i.e. putting the front "dot" on top of (i.e. covering) the target. It kinda makes sense that it would shoot a little low at the "normal" 7 yards, which is where I assume you're shooting(?)

I just took a look at mine and I think you could file the front sight down and re-do the dot. In fact, you could probably file it down to a post and just paint it white.

I'm hitting at least a foot low at 15 yds.; will be looking for replacement or altered sights. Will be next shooting at 7-10 yds. just to see how it hits at defensive range.

,     The sights on the R51 are set on military center.   place the sights over the target and you will be dead on at 15 yds.
I know it is a drag, but that is the way Big Green set the sights up.   Takes practice!

Thanks guys. I am confused though. Military hold? Put the muzzle over the target? What, HUH? I learned and teach 12:00 o'clock hold and 6:00 o'clock hold. I have never heard of a mlitary hold. What exactly is a military hold? Do I aim at the top of the "bulls eye", center of the "bulls eye" or bottom of the "bulls eye"? I have been using a 6:00 o'clock hold, that is the bottom of the "bulls eye". Seems to me that if I use this so called military hold, which I assume is the top of the "bulls eye", I cannot see the target. What is the point of that? That would mean that to shoot center of mass on a human, you would have to aim for the neck or collar bone. Strange. Where did you guys hear about this so called military hold? Referances?

Seems to me it would be better just to change the sights.

My R51 also shot low and a few inches to the right, I ended up filing the the front sight down and moving the front sight to the right.

Combat Centery hold is to cover the center of the bull with the sight.   Hope the article helps.

What you guys are calling a combat hold or a military hold is actualy a 12 o'clock hold.

Now back to my original question. Does anyone know where I can buy a set of sights that are not night sights that will give me the proper 6 o'clock hold?

Hi. I need to move both front and rear sights...yet even after loosening the set screw and putting tiny drop of Kroil 'creeping' oil, placing slide in padded vice and trying to drift sights with an appropriate tool, they won't move at all, almost like they're 'welded' into place or something. Any suggestions as to how I can move them? What did you do to get them to slide over? Thanks. Springfield Art.

   Springfield,  RE; As to moving your pistol sights. Forget the vice. Lay the pistol flat on it's side on a really sturdy bench on a towel or piece of leather. Use a brass punch. In this case a 1/4" brass punch. A pretty hefty hammer. Make sure the piece your working on is very solid on the bench. Smack the punch really hard. It will take several good licks. In these type of dovetail cuts I always work the sights left to right. Hope this helps...FRED

Here's what I use to drift sights. These are tool bits for lathes, come in different sizes and are cheap. They fit better than a round punch and stay square to the sight so moving the sight is very easy. I also use a vise but set micarta on each side of the slide to prevent marring. Haven't scratched a sight or slide yet.

Thanks Fred. I have been to Dawson's web site twice and see no reference for R51 anything. I do not particularly want or need tritium sights.
