Just found something on my R51 that may make yall's experience of field stripping your R51 easier. I found that on my pistol, if you grasp the front of the slide and GENTLY and SLOWLY move it to the rear, the slide locks itself exactly in the position for it to be taken down. Again, move the slide to the rear slowly so you can feel it. Right when the take down notch in the slide comes directly over the front of the slide lock lever, it should latch open (not securely, but it will stop), (or at least it does on mine). I have found this makes it a lot easier, as I only have to grasp the barrel and push the lever out with my other hand instead of struggling to hold the slide with one hand. Not sure if this is something peculiar to my pistol, or if other's pistols will do the same thing. I hope I found a solution to make life easy. If not let me know. Hope this helps!

R51Fan,
Nice try, but my pistol does not do that.  Gawd, I wish it did.  Appreciate the attempt.

Dang! Sorry about that! Will post a picture of how it locks itself back today, for all to see. Just so folks don't think I'm making something up. Wish it would have worked for you.

My humblest apologies. The hammer must NOT BE COCKED before attempting this! If it is cocked, it certainly will not work.

This is what the slide looks like when it latches itself in the take down position

R51Fan,
I wonder if Remington knows this?  It is certainly not in the manual.
I will try it with mine tonight.

If Remington knew about it I wonder why they didn't tell anyone. I have a Huntsville gun, not a Charlottesville (or a re-worked) gun. Does anyone else out there have a Huntsville frame pistol that does the same thing? Just trying to determine if this is has any relation to new production Gen 2 guns, not re-worked Gen 1 guns or if mine is just doing crazy things. More posts from other memebers would be greatly appreciated!n :)

R51Fan,
I forgot to mention, my R51 will lock up with the hammer down.   And it was made in the "Queen City".

R51Fan... works as you described with my Charlotte frame Gen2. Pull pin then continue moving slide aft to cock hammer. Hold barrel with fingers or clamp. Then move slide foward to remove as usual... Interesting find!... Thx Joe

funflyer

Tried mine today and it will lock close to the TD position but it requires a whisker more aft movement for the slide stop pin to come out.

Texans R51

Gen 2 from Charlotte tried this weekend and worked. Nice find!

Glad this is working for everyone! Wonder why Remington didn't put this in the manual??

That's right Blackie. Read my other post. I think its post number 4 in this thread. I realized it after I already posted. Instead of editing an existing post, I just wrote a new one. Thanks though! Sometimes I miss stuff!
