I had loved the looks of the R 51 when it was first announced. I was disappointed when the original issue item became a firearm to scorn.

When I cruised through the Davidson's Gun Genie recently I saw the second generation of the R 51 on sale for a super reasonable price and I put in my deposit.

Since then the pistol has arrived at my LGS and I picked up my R 51. I have taken it to the range and shot off 150 rounds, thus far.

I am still wearing a few scabs from slide bite. This is from my own carelessness. I was gripping the pistol too deep into my big paws. The effect is a LOT less than I experienced with a Sig 230 in .380.

In a size no bigger than that of a common .380 Remington has produced a single action CCW 9 mm that could work equally well in either a left or right hand grip.

I picked up my R 51 at Sgt. Mac's new location in Galveston and brought it home. I was soon giving it a cleaning and lubing with Break Free CLP.

Later on I happened to need to go onto the mainland and stopped off at The Arms Room to use their indoor range. I fired off the first 150 rounds from my R 51.

I had one failure to feed. I had two failure to fires. The ammo was from Freedom Munitions and both rounds went off the second time the primer was struck. The failure to feed was perhaps related to using the "slingshot" method of racking the slide. There were no failures when using the slide release.

I would also note that my arthritis was giving me fits on the day I took the pistol to the range. This hampered my grip and manipulation of the pistol. Your mileage may vary.

I am not yet ready to order a holster to perform concealed carry with the R 51. No one should without more than 200 rounds down the pipe. But so far the R 51 has shown itself to be a very capable pistol. I look forward to more testing and hopefully carrying.

The two photos I posted of the targets were shot at a distance of 5 yards on an indoor range using a 2 handed grip.

WrongWay,
I also have "Bearpaw" hands, so I went to a western wear shop and purchased a set of light weight riding gloves.   That put a stop to Slide bite.
I have heard it said that that is not a proper way to practice because you won't be wearing gloves when the SHTF.   Well, in my opinion,  if that
happens, I will not be worrying about sllde bite.
Enjoy your new pistol,  I love mine.

So many guns, so little time!

It sounds like an occasional failure to feed is common with the R51 when new.  I had to give the slide a bump to get it to return to battery a few times.  After about 200 rounds the problem has not recurred.
